If you found this page you’re probably either a new hire at Amazon (or considering applying) and wondering what the Amazon employee discount is and how it works exactly. While researching their employee discount, and talking to my Amazon contacts, it quickly became evident that their discount is only a small portion of their employee benefits package. So I went ahead and also listed the major Amazon employee benefits you get from working for the eCommerce giant. Let’s get to it shall we…

Amazon Employee Discount: The Nuts & Bolts So You Can Take Advantage

What is the Amazon Employee Discount?

Amazon offers a 10% employee discount.

They cap the annual discount at $100. So basically you get 10% off everything you buy up to $1,000.

While it’s not a huge discount, it’s definitely better than nothing.

How Long Before You’re Eligible?

I was told by a current Amazon employee that you have to work for the company for 30 days before you can tap into your employee discount.

Are Any Products Excluded from the Discount?

Yes.

Products must be sold and fulfilled directly by Amazon and NOT 3rd party sellers.

Everything else is excluded.

Do Employees Get a Discount on Amazon Prime?

Unfortunately, NO.

Employees are stuck paying full price for a Prime Membership.

Can I Use My Discount on Prime Day?

YES, you can use your 10% discount on any day of the year as long as products are eligible.

Do Employees in India Get a Discount?

Unfortunately, NO.

I chatted with a customer service rep that lived in India and he told me they do not get an employee discount.

Do 3rd Party Contractors Get the Discount?

No.

Unfortunately 3rd party sellers and those who deliver for Amazon, but are independent contractors, are not eligible.

According to Amazon employee, Sabrina, the best way to see if you’re eligible for the discount is to check the AtoZ app and see what your “Employee Status” is.

Within the app, you’ll want to tap your picture and see if an employee discount code appears.

Can I Shop From My Amazon Affiliate Links?

The Amazon Affiliate Program lets you earn a commission on any Amazon links on your site or blog that people click-on and subsequently make a purchase.

You get a small commission on the sale and it can add up to significant money depending on how much traffic your site gets.

BUT….you cannot click on your own Amazon links, buy something, and earn a commission.

They put a kibosh on that sneaky practice awhile back.

Do Employees Earn Extra for Working on Holidays?

Yes, Amazon employees earn “time and half” if they work on the following 6 holidays:

  • New Year’s Day.
  • Memorial Day.
  • Independence Day.
  • Labor Day.
  • Thanksgiving Day.
  • Christmas Day.

Walmart Employee Discount: A Store Manager Helps Me Break It ALL Down

If you’re considering working for Wally World, or maybe you’ve been hired recently, you’ll want to know how the Walmart employee discount works. It has some MAJOR nuisances to it, and can be very confusing to many new employees. So with the help of a friend, who’s also a 10-year Walmart employee and current assistant manager, I figured out exactly what items the discount works on so you can start saving some money when you become eligible. Here’s what you need to know.

Walmart Employee Discount: An Employee Helps Me Break It ALL Down

What Employee Discount Does Walmart Offer?

Walmart offers a 10% employee discount, good for both in-store and online purchases.

From their website comes this VERY murky statement, “Our associate discount card offers a 10% discount on fresh fruits, vegetables and regularly priced general merchandise at Walmart stores.”

What the heck constitutes general merchandise?

So with the help of my friend, who’s been working in management positions at Walmart for over 10 years, I got some answers to the following questions…

What Items Are Eligible for the Discount?

According to my friend, the following items are the most frequently purchased with the employee discount card in her particular store.

NOTE: She also said to think of the discount as good for most things in an “old Walmart” store before Super Walmart stores existed.

They include the following:

– Fresh Fruit and Produce – Stay healthy my friends and get a 10% discount.

– General Merchandise – Fairly ambiguous term but includes most things that you can’t eat. I was told to think about the stuff that you don’t buy on a regular basis and there’s a good chance it’s eligible.

– Clothing and Shoes – Stock up your wardrobe and get it all for 10% off.

– Code 82 Items – I was told most employees know “Code 82” items as the snacks, candy, and soda sold in the checkout lane. These items are all eligible for your 10% discount.

– Electronics – Not all electronics are eligible, but most are. Employee tip: When trying to buy video games or consoles and your discount isn’t working in-store, DON’T give up, instead try buying them online and you stand a great chance of getting the 10% discount.

Are Any Items Excluded From the Discount?

Yes, quite a few actually and this has many employees disappointed in the discount.

More specifically, my friend cleared up some confusion and pointed out the items that are NOT eligible:

Meat and Dairy – This includes frozen meats and frozen dairy products like ice cream.

Most Food Items (including Frozen) – This exclusion is often lifted during the month of December, as it was in 2023.

Alcohol and Tobacco – Gonna have to pay full price for your booze and smokes.

Clearance Items – All clearance products that are already marked down are ineligible.

Rollback Items – I was told that Rollback items typically go back to their original price within 90 days, so you’ll have to wait until then to get your discount, unless the sale price offers greater savings than your 10% discount, in which case you should just buy it.

Price Matches – Fortunately, Walmart only price matches some online retailers so this won’t be much of an issue.

Photo Orders – This includes photo gifts.

Gift Cards – This one makes sense otherwise employees would abuse it.

Travel Purchases – I wasn’t aware until now that Walmart even sold travel packages.

Shipping Charges – Not an issue as Walmart.com offers free shipping on $25 or more.

Marketplace Items – Marketplace stuff is sold by 3rd parties on the Walmart platform.

How Long Do I Need to Be Employed?

You have to work at Walmart for 90 days before you’re eligible for the employee discount.

What is the Walmart Associate Discount Card?

Walmart Discount Employee Card

After you’re hired and have worked for 90 days, you’ll get your own Walmart Associate Discount Card.

This card can be used in-store and online to get your discount.

For in-store purchases you’ll simply present it at checkout to score your discount.

PRO TIP

Always swipe your discount card. My friend said she always tell new Walmart employees to swipe their Associate Discount card whenever they buy something as you NEVER know what items might be eligible. She said the system can by wonky and sometimes products that you don’t think are eligible, will be.

Can My Family & Friends Use the Discount?

No.

Only you and your spouse can get the discount.

Other family members and friends CANNOT get the employee discount on their own.

But…you can certainly use your discount on their behalf.

This can be done in-store as well as in the online “Discount Center” (see Below).

What About Christmas-Time Discounts?

While I couldn’t find anything specific on the Walmart website, I’ve heard on several occasions that you’ll get a better employee discount around the holidays.

Specifically, according to ex-Walmart employee Julie, the discount in December “opens to all items in the store including discounted food and rollback items while excluding milk, gift cards, alcohol and cigarettes. That starts after black Friday and runs until January 1st.”

She also told me that “employees who work the day before, the day of, and the day after Thanksgiving will get a certificate of a one time use of an extra 15% discount on top of the their 10% but the coupon does expire.”

Thanks Julie, great info.

Can Employees Use Their Discount on Tires?

Yes.

Thanks to Walmart employee, Ryan, who dropped the knowledge on buying tires from Walmart and even included a screenshot to prove it.

What Other Employee Discounts Does Walmart Offer?

Walmart offers a very cool online portal called the Walmart Associate Discount Center.

Once you login, you’ll find a bunch of exclusive discounts on vacation packages, cell phone plans, along with deals on countless products and services.

The cool thing about this website is that many of the deals are negotiated exclusively by Walmart for their associates.

The deals change all the time so it’s worth bookmarking and checking back often for new bargains.

What Are Some Other Employee Perks?

Here are a few of the most popular perks that come with employment at Walmart.

1. They offer an associate stock purchase plan with company match.

2. Ability to contribute to a 401(k) starting on your first day. Walmart offers a 6% match after 1-year on the job.

3. Medical plans starting at around $26 per pay period.

4. A generous 10 weeks of paid maternity leave where you’ll get 100% of your pay.

5. You’ll also get $5,000 to go towards the expenses of adopting a child.

Apple Employee Discount: All Your Burning Questions Answered

Does Apple sound like a cool place to work? Maybe you already got hired or maybe you’re thinking of seeking a job with the tech giant. In either case, it’s important to understand the Apple employee discount as it’s one of their greatest perks. Here’s everything you need to know so you can take full-advantage.

Apple Employee Discount: All Your Burning Questions Answered

What Exactly is the Apple Employee Discount?

Their employee discount is 25% off…well sort of, let me explain.

Specifically, it’s a one-time annual 25% discount in each product category.

Their four main product lines include the iPhone, iPad, computer, and Apple Watch.

So in a year’s time, you could theoretically get each of those devices for 25% off the retail price.

I was also told that workers get 10% off everything in the Apple Store except gift cards. (If you currently work at Apple can you please verify or debunk this in the comments section, thanks in advance.)

You have to work at Apple for 90 days before you’re eligible for the employee discount.

PRO TIP: YOUR APPLE PURCHASES ARE TRACKED

Apple makes employees purchase through an internal URL where the employee discount is reflected in the prices. Also, I was told by a friendly employee on my last trip to an Apple Store that you CANNOT sell products you buy for 1 year as they track your purchases internally and lock the IMEI to your employee ID for 365 days. So if you sold an iPhone or MacBook (for instance), the new owner would not be able to register it to their name until the 1-year mark passes.

Also, any purchase you make through the internal Apple URL needs to be made with your personal credit card or debit card. This means you’ll still get your credit card reward points on top of your employee discount.

Any Additional Discounts?

Yes, there certainly are.

A former Apple intern said that once you use your 25% discount, you can still take advantage of the 15% off family & friends discount for up to “10 units”.

So you can buy stuff for family and friends and get a cool 15% off.

In addition, after every 2 years of employment, you’ll score a free $500 to buy whatever you want.

This used to be every 3 years, but in 2020 they changed it to every 2 years. (Thanks Dee Dee for the new information!)

PLUS…you can combine the $500 with the 25% employee discount and score a MAJOR deal.

Like the intern says in the article, you basically get a free new iPhone every 2 years.

PRO TIP: CAN’T COMBINE THE EMPLOYEE AND STUDENT DISCOUNT

As I’ve discussed before, Apple also offers a solid student discount. Unfortunately, they do not let you stack the discounts together, you have to pick one or the other. Do the math to figure out which discount saves you the most money. Typically the employee discount will save you quite a bit more as the student discount is only around 5-10% off the retail price.

Do Apple Employees get the Latest iPhone for Free?

I’ve heard this rumor for years, and the answer for employees is unfortunately NO.

Unless of course they take advantage of the work-around hack mentioned above.

How Long Do Employees Have to Wait to Buy New Products?

After Apple launches a new product, they will immediately be available for employees to purchase with their discount.

This was not always the case as employees would often have to wait at least 1 month until they “opened” the discount to workers.

PRO TIP: SEASONAL EMPLOYEES CAN GET THE DISCOUNT…SORTA

While seasonal hires can get the discount, they need to work for at least 90 days to do so. In actuality, most seasonal Apple workers won’t work that long, so they’ll never be able to take advantage of the employee discount. So if you’re thinking of apply for a job around Christmas to try and get the discount, you’re going to be out of luck.

Do Employees Get Discounts With Cell Phone Carriers?

Yes.

Wanting to stay anonymous in the comments, I had an employee drop the knowledge on this.

They stated that they “often get discounts with their cell phone/mobile carriers just by having an @apple.com email address and/or verifiable company credentials.”

While they didn’t say exactly what their discount is, it’s safe to assume this savings could be substantial.

Is There a Discount on Apps or Software?

Yes.

From the same anonymous employee mentioned above, “Developers of apps or tools are eager to give their software away to employees for free, presumably to get it to gain traction via word of mouth advertising.”

This is very little known perk of working for Apple that is definitely worth mentioning.

Are Any Apple Products Excluded?

No.

Everything that Apple sells is eligible for the employee discount.

Can the Discount Be Used on Black Friday & Cyber Monday?

Yes, your employee discount can be used any day of the year.

Anything Else Discount Related?

Apparently Apple is also famous for offering a bunch of 3rd party discounts to employees as well.

These products include things like iPhone cases, screen protectors, Apple Watch bands, iPad cases, and laptop accessories.

Discounts range from 10% off all the way up to 50%.
