Secret Discounts You Probably Had No Idea Existed…But Wish You Did

I recently did a fun story with Jimmy Rhoades from The List TV about “Secret Discounts” that you probably had NO idea existed. Such great out-of-the-box ways to save that I knew I had to share them here on my blog as well. While these tips are somewhat obscure, they will undoubtedly help you save money on travel, dining out, health, entertainment, grocery stores, and at retail stores too.

Secret Discounts You Probably Had No Idea Existed...But Wish You Did

1. Senior Discount When You’re Not a Senior

AARP Senior Discounts

Did you know you don’t have to be 50 or older to score an AARP membership? Crazy, huh?

Turns out you only need to be 18 to get an AARP membership and all the Senior discounts that go with it.

Great discounts at a bunch of national restaurants, grocery stores, and even retail stores.

Even health and wellness discounts at places like LensCrafters, Kroger Pharmacy, and CVS.

Pay just $12 for your first year and $16/year after that.

Heck, use it once at Outback Steakhouse and CVS and it’ll probably pay for itself.

2. Employee Perks When You Don’t Work

EBG Employee Perks

Many employers offer an “employee perk program” to their workers.

You might already be familiar with the program and discounts that your job offers.

The biggest player is a company called Entertainment Benefits Group (EBG) as they service over 40,000 corporate clients and 500 million employees.

BUT….did you know that most of these perks extend to your spouse and family members as well?

Another employee discount program gaining traction is Corporate Shopping and the cool thing about them is they allow you to invite friends to be members as well!

Have your spouse ask about it where they work and start taking advantage today if you can.

3. Student Discounts When You’re Not a Student

Amazon Prime Student

Most student discounts these days require you to have a .edu email address or valid transcript.

In the past you could simply buy a .edu address but that practice has been cracked down on in recent years.

These student discounts are significant too: Free 6 months of Amazon Prime Student, 15% off at Banana Republic and J.Crew, 15% at TCBY, and 10% at Arby’s to name a few.

So the takeaway here is to have your college student do some shopping for YOU so you can take advantage of the sweet discounts too.

This is especially true with Amazon Prime Student. Have them do your Amazon shopping for you and get free 2-day shipping without having to pay for a Prime membership.

4. Military Discounts Extended To Immediate Family

Lowe's Military Discount

Military discounts aren’t mandated. There’s no law. They’re at the sole discretion of retailers, which means they can vary pretty drastically.

But many of them extend to the families of active military. Some even extend to family of veterans.

For instance, Jimmy was able to join USAA because his wife was already a member. And she was a member because her dad was a member. And her dad was a member because he’s a veteran. You might be able to get the same discount domino effect.

Another example is at Lowe’s. They give a flat military discount of 10% to all active and retired military personnel.

It is also worth noting, from the Lowe’s website, that “immediate family member(s) of someone with a valid military ID Card” are also eligible for the 10% discount. Click here to enroll.

For all other vets, Lowe’s gives a discount on Veteran’s Day, 4th of July, and Memorial Day.

Ask the Reader: What “secret discounts” did I miss? Let me know and I’ll get them added to this post, thanks.

As many of you know, I’ve discussed Amazon shopping hacks before in great detail. But the new (and always changing) ways to save on Amazon continues to amaze me. So today I have 3 more highly-clever tricks to make the most of your Amazon shopping experience. From scoring a free $5 from Amazon, to cool credits for waiting more than 2-days for delivery, these tips are sure to be a hit if you shop on Amazon regularly. Let’s break it down…

Simple Amazon Shopping Hacks That'll Help You Save

1. Score $5 for Adding $20 Cash To Your Amazon Account

Amazon $5 Free Cash

Available at over 30,000 participating stores, Amazon Cash is a simple way to add cash to your Amazon balance.

This is a great option for those who don’t have a credit card, debit card, or bank card.

You just visit a participating store, have them scan the Amazon Cash barcode within the Amazon app, and pay them cash for any amount up to $500.

The balance is then made available immediately for shopping on Amazon.com.

The best part is Amazon is currently offering a free $5 Amazon credit when you add $20 or more via Amazon Cash to those using it for the 1st time.

Yes, you read that correctly. Go do this immediately, whether you have a credit card or not, it’s FREE MONEY.

Expires on 12/31/20. But I’m guessing they will extend this expiration date as they have in the past.

2. Use FillerItem.com to Reach $35 Free Shipping Threshold

Amazon Filler Items

This Amazon hack is for non-Prime members.

As you’re probably aware, Amazon requires you to spend $35 to get free shipping.

Nothing worse than paying for shipping on your $32 order. Or worse yet, adding something to your cart that you don’t need just to get over the $35 threshold.

Enter the clever website Filler Item.com.

The site is kinda brilliant as it lets you enter the amount you need to get free shipping and pulls back hundreds of products that you might actually need.

In other words. get free shipping and a product that won’t waste your money.

Check out the site, it’s kinda fun to see what Amazon sells.

3. Consider “No-Rush Shipping” For Cool Credits

Amazon Credits

If you’re a Prime member, but don’t need the item in 2 days, consider selecting “FREE No-Rush Shipping”.

By doing so, you’ll get a free $1 reward to be used for digital items like music, movies, or book downloads.

Do this Amazon trick all the time and you’ll quickly get a free movie or several music downloads out of it.

These credits change quite often and have also included Amazon Pantry credits in the past.

I absolutely love shopping at Ross Dress for Less. I buy almost all of my clothes and shoes there. Why would you pay full price for name-brands when you can get the same stuff at Ross for 40-60% less? Yes, it takes a little more time but totally worth it in my book. Today I have a couple smart tips to save EVEN MORE money at Ross. Here are the two best days of the week to shop at Ross and save BIG. Hope it helps.

The 2 Best Days to Shop at Ross to Save Money

1. Shop on a Monday for New Markdowns

Ross Price Tags

It’s obviously smart to shop at Ross right after they do their store markdowns.

Thanks to reader Kylie, this Monday afternoon the BEST day to shop.

Specifically, she said, “I was head of clearance at Ross and MONDAY is the day we only do mark downs.”

So by shopping on a Monday you get first dibs on new clearance deals and have actual opportunities to save money.

If you’re an avid Ross shopper, it’s smart to politely ask an employee what day they do their markdowns as it’s possible markdown days can vary from store to store.

2. 55 or Older? Always Shop on a Tuesday

Tuesday is Senior Day at Ross

Ross stores across the country offer a 10% discount to those 55 or older every TUESDAY when you sign-up for their “Every Tuesday Club”.

I called several Ross locations to verify this information and it certainly is true.

To make it happen, you’ll need to visit the Ross customer service desk to get your Every Tuesday card.

Be sure to bring a valid photo ID with your date of birth visible.

I was even told that the 10% discount is good on clearance and regular-priced merchandise.

So if you’re over 55, be sure to shop on a Tuesday from this point forward.

By doing so, you’ll also be able to take advantage of recently marked-down merchandise from the day before.

Bonus “Discount Tip” for Ross Shoppers

From blog reader Sarah, “Start shopping from red zone – clearance area. If you find anything wrong for the product you really like, don’t hesitate to ask an additional discount. Usually they can offer additional 10% on top of everything.”

Great tip Sarah.

I’ve actually done this myself more than once.

You have to look at it this way, they really want to get rid of clearance stuff, and if it has a small blemish, they REALLY want it gone.

So for them, offering another 10% off is totally worth it.
