IKEA Return Policy: All Your Questions Answered on One Page
IKEA has been the world’s largest furniture maker since 2008. The liberal IKEA return policy is no doubt a big part of their popularity among shoppers. But as with any return policy, there are always some nuisances that aren’t answered on the company’s website and typically require a phone call to the store. To alleviate that phone call, and make your life a little easier, here’s everything you need to know about their policy, much of which you won’t find anywhere else.
IKEA Gives You a Year to Make a Return
365 return days to be exact.
Yes, you have exactly 1-year from your original purchase date to bring items back to IKEA.
They call it their “No-Nonsense” policy and it’s pretty darn generous.

PRO TIP: RETURING OPENED PRODUCTS
IKEA gives you 180 days to return stuff that you’ve opened.
This includes products that you have started to assemble. For a long time this was also 365 days, but has recently been reduced to a still generous 180 days.
Be Sure to Hold On To Your Receipt
As of October 22, 2020 you need your receipt to make a return.
If you don’t have your receipt, IKEA can try to use one of the following methods to find your purchase: Credit or debit card, gift card number, or an order number (if applicable).
If they’re unable to find any trace of your purchase, ask that they issue you a merchandise credit for the lowest selling price within the past 365 calendar days.
They often will if you’re polite.
Any Exceptions to the 365-Day Return Policy?
Yes, there are a few big exception.
– Mattresses: If you purchase a mattress from IKEA, and don’t like it, you can’t simply return it for a refund.
You’ll have to exchange it for another mattress and you can only do this once within a 90-day window.
– Gift Cards: You cannot return gift cards to IKEA. You’ll have to sell them through a site like Raise.com if you want to get some money for them.
– Plants: These cannot be returned.
– Cut Fabric: Measure twice, cut once as cut fabric cannot be returned.
– Custom Countertops: These also cannot be returned.
– As-is Products: These usually are sold at a big discount and hence cannot be returned and are considered Final Sale.

Returning Furniture That’s Already Assembled
So if you finally get your stuff home (and spend an entire weekend assembling it) you CAN still return it to IKEA if you change your mind or it has a defect.
If you can return the item to IKEA yourself, they DO NOT require you to take it apart.
After you return it, they’ll put it in the “assembled” discount section for bargain shoppers to grab.
They state that items must be in unused and salable condition.
But the term “unused” is very subjective in this case. Technically, when you put a bookcase together and throw a book on it, it is used.
Let me know in the comments below if you’ve had trouble returning items to IKEA because of this.
From talking to several IKEA employees, they’re fairly generous in what they term as “used” and “salable” and will take back most items without a hassle.
PRO TIP: CAN’T GET THE ITEM BACK TO THE STORE YOURSELF?
IKEA has a Pick-It-Up option for you if you can’t get it back to the store yourself.
But keep in mind that if you want IKEA to come to your house and pick-it-up, you must disassembled the item first.
Also, an employee explained to me that there is a fee for this as well. She told me that the return pickup fee will be the same as the delivery fee.
If it was in-store purchase, then the pick-up fee will be calculated based on the distance you are from an IKEA store, and the size of the item.
Original Box Not Needed
If you threw away the original packaging or box you can still make the return.
I actually hit up IKEA live chat to verify this and was told, “you can return it in any box properly.”
Might be a good idea to keep the box if you haven’t assembled it yet as it’ll make returning it easier.
You Can Also Return Washed Bedding
From the comments, it seems you can return washed items as someone returned washed cushions without a problem.
I’m guessing if the washed item lost color, or seems defective, they would be much more likely to take it back.
PRO TIP: POLICY CAN CHANGE BY COUNTRY
Just to be clear, I live in the U.S. and this article is related to the return policy in the United States.
Be aware that other countries with an IKEA store definitely can have a different policy.
For example, Canada IKEA only gives you 90 days to return something that you opened, and many IKEA locations in Europe only allow 90 days to return stuff, opened or not.
So if you’re shopping at an IKEA not in the U.S. be sure to do some independent research so you know exactly what return policy you’re dealing with.
You Can Return Clearance and Bargain Corner Items
You can return these items, just not items marked as being sold “As-Is”.
This means you have nothing to lose when buying something on clearance that’s already been assembled and marked down.
Take it home, try it out, and if you don’t like it, just return it to the IKEA warehouse for a full refund.
You Have Zero Options After 365 Days
Unfortunately, you don’t have any return options after 365 days.
You’ll have to sell your IKEA items via Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, eBay, or a yard sale.

Returning Online Purchases Is Fairly Easy
When buying items from the IKEA website, your return options are slightly different.
Specifically, you only have 14 days after your purchase to return items via the mail, or home pickup for large items.
After 14 days, you’ll have to return online purchases to the IKEA warehouse.
Be sure to keep your online receipt or packing slip to make the return go smoothly.
Note: Items bought in-store CANNOT be returned via the mail or online. They must be brought back to your local IKEA.
How to Return a Gift to IKEA
If you have the gift receipt, no problem.
Simply return the item and receive store credit for the item’s purchase price.
I was told that if you ask for cash, instead of store credit, that may be okay.
Apparently there’s no policy in place either way and it’s left up to the discretion of the individual store.
If you don’t have the receipt, it becomes very difficult to return the item as they won’t even give you store credit.
I was told by an IKEA representative that the “purchase holder will need to contact IKEA or take the item back to the store as they have purchased the item.”
Ask the Reader: Have you used IKEA’s return policy in the past? Was it as awesome as it sounds or am I missing something?

I am forced to put my credit card purchase in dispute as you have made no access for me to return my online damaged purchase for a scheduled pick up. order # 279382813 03-08-2018
worst customer service .. two hours on hold … i gave up!!!

This isn’t IKEA’s website.
Can someone help me iv built a cupboard… it’s too big and want to take it back … I’m unasembling it can carnt take the dowelingout … will they still except it?
Do they take back washed bedding? We got it home and washed it and it doesn’t look nearly as vibrant as it did in the store.
i returned washed cushions and they took them. i guess you could give it a try
I have a bedframe and a cube storage I bought in Sept 2017 but I ended up buying a different dresser and a bigger frame since those weren’t as good as I thought they would be. Can I still return them – as in would I be questioned why I’m returning it so late? They’re in resalable condition and I live 3 hours away from Ikea so I wasn’t really hyped about the drive. Lol
Hi I was thinking about buying an armchair online but how do I return if I don’t like it when I see
Do you know if you can return part of a “set” if the parts have their own product number and are sold separately? For example, I purchased the Pax wardrobe and it comes with wire drawers that are sold separately. I decided to get different drawers for my pax system. Can I return the wire drawers?
This might be an issue since I’m guessing you paid for the set at a discounted price. I’d call and ask.
This return info is totally wrong. Ikea has a 45 day return policy with receipt. Without receipt, gift card only for the lowest price on the article in the last year! In my case, 4 sets of drapes at 40.00 each, they took $8 off each. Cost me 32.00 plus tax for losing a recipt for 2 days. I can prove om my credit card receipt that i bought the drapes when i said i did. They don’t care.
Where on their website do you see 45 day return window?
It’s definitely 365 days. Says so all over their website.
You had first mentioned if they cannot find any trace of purchase, they will issue a store credit. Then you said, if it was a gift and you don’t have the receipt, they won’t take it back at all. That is a bit confusing and contradicting. How would they know if it was a gift or not and why does it even make a difference. Their website clearly states, “No receipt, no problem”. This could not have been further from the truth. We were given the hardest time and they gave zero f*%@s!
In person, we were told we need a receipt because it was assembled. Their website says the opposite. We were told that their policy is return for store credit was we had to have a receipt. Again, website says opposite. It was a very frustrating and disappointing experience and their returns department staff needs to be re-trained.
Hi, I have a question that I bought a mattress in IKEA 3 days ago, and it is still on the bag and unused. So, can I refund it?
Since it’s unopened, you may be able to return it rather than exchange it. Call and ask the store you purchased it from.
Does IKEA expect you to disassemble the item back to the way it was delivered before returning it? I am reconsidering a couch I recently bought there. The couch has been assembled (and unfortunately, I’ve already recycled the packaging). I would need to disassemble it in order to bring it back to the store, however, I wouldn’t take covers off the cushions if that is not required.
Just returned a couch tonight. You’re fine with it completely assembled!
Did you have the original packaging and boxes when you returned the couch? I got a bedframe that turned out to be too big for the space and all the boxes are in the trash.
does this statement applies to Hong Kong Ikea too? or Ikea policy is globally consistent and same in every country?
I’m in return policy hell. Long story short, they (in cooperation with XPO) messed up my delivery. Problem 1: their phone system is easily the worst I’ve ever had to deal with. If their queues are too high, their phone system simply does not let you talk to someone. Even if you’ve been transferred from one rep to another, if the queue is too high, you will get a pleasant “Our call volume is is greater than expected, please try again later” or something along those lines. Problem 2: The refunded my delivery fee to a gift card and sent it via snail mail to me. They claim that their system cannot process credit card refunds over the phone and that I have to go back to the store I purchased it from. Um? To get my money back I need to take roughly 2 hours out of my day? *AND* spend gas getting there? IKEA is one of the *worst* companies I’ve had to deal with on the phones. Their reps have been patient, but I swear, this is a nightmare scenario that no one at IKEA will help with. If I even breathe the air near IKEA I will be furious. After pushing the “manager” of the resolutions line, she offered to have *her* manager call me. I don’t expect anything to change, so I’ll just keep escalating. The kicker is that she kept saying there will be an accommodation if I go to the store. At this point, there is no accommodation that will rectify my opinion of IKEA.
Has anyone returned $600 worth of stuff in one go? I’m talking a bed, desk, filing cabinet, some containers, pillows, curtains. I am worried they might question why I am returning so much. I have receipts for all but $150 of it.
I have assembled the table and chairs that I purchased but do not like the feel of them. Other than trying them out, they are still unused and undamaged. To return them (with the original receipt from 30 days ago), do I need to unassemble them or can I return them fully assembled for a full refund? The purchase was made at the store and I will be returning it to the store. I am hoping for a refund vs. store credit since I want to purchase a table elsewhere.
Hi, I tried returning a rug that I bought. IKEA wouldn’t take it back saying I did not have the product tag attached to it. I even had the receipt. I was returning back in 2 weeks, and i don’t remember where I kept the tag, if at all I took it out. IKEA policy clearly states that packaging is not a requirement for returning the product. Is this a mistake on the executive who handled my return?
They said in the chat I had with one that they wont accept the return of a cupboard ordered online after 6 months as it must have been used, and they dont accept used products. This is London, United Kingdom.
IKEA returns policy has changed. They wont allow returns without a receipt & without packaging. I was advised previously to bring it in and that its OK without receipt & without packaging however when I went in today December 10th 2019 they just point blank refused, they said their policy changed in November 2019. I even told them ‘ I dont want a refund, I would be happy for a exchange it with the same item thats on display (exactly same product, just the colour is different) They still refused. They didnt even look at the product. Unreasonable and I wont be buying anything IKEA again.
same bad experience here, and it is not even very expensive item like $40 lamp unused. After spending thousands here and after Covid 19 difficulty of the past year, they just have to consideration for customers. Last time ever buying any thing from this store. Hope Amazon will kill you guys too for the bad service.
My daughter spent 2 days working on building out a book shelf. After finishing it, she noticed it was a terrible paint job and has cracks. Are her only options to return it or exchange it? Is there nothing that could compensate for the lost time and displeasure of the finished product? Or is this just the risk you run with IKEA products? Potentially wasting your time on building something to find out the pieces are in bad shape.
That’s the risk you run. After opening the packages the bad paint job would have been visible. I always check my individual pieces before assembling anything complicated from them.
The IKEA in my city closed. Where can I return this item. I’m in Ontario Canada
Call and ask, you can probably return it online.
Does IKEA pick up furniture for returns? I’m wanting to return a couch I bought 2 months ago but don’t have transportation to bring it back. I’m assuming if they do, it’s for a fee, but just wondering.
Just read online that they will pick up larger furniture items, but you have to call and set up a delivery schedule, and it does cost a fee. Fee isn’t listed, as I’m assuming it changes with distance and such. It also says not all locations are available for this service so you will have to call and ask. Hope that helps!
Heads up, I just spent almost an hour on the phone with IKEA’s customer service number to ask about this and the rep had no idea what I was talking about. When I read him what the website says about it he placed me on hold and never returned to the line. I was on hold for about 20 minutes before hanging up.
I am having terrible trouble canceling an item
