IKEA Return Policy: All Your Questions Answered on One Page
IKEA has been the world’s largest furniture maker since 2008. The liberal IKEA return policy is no doubt a big part of their popularity among shoppers. But as with any return policy, there are always some nuisances that aren’t answered on the company’s website and typically require a phone call to the store. To alleviate that phone call, and make your life a little easier, here’s everything you need to know about their policy, much of which you won’t find anywhere else.
IKEA Gives You a Year to Make a Return
365 return days to be exact.
Yes, you have exactly 1-year from your original purchase date to bring items back to IKEA.
They call it their “No-Nonsense” policy and it’s pretty darn generous.

PRO TIP: RETURING OPENED PRODUCTS
IKEA gives you 180 days to return stuff that you’ve opened.
This includes products that you have started to assemble. For a long time this was also 365 days, but has recently been reduced to a still generous 180 days.
Be Sure to Hold On To Your Receipt
As of October 22, 2020 you need your receipt to make a return.
If you don’t have your receipt, IKEA can try to use one of the following methods to find your purchase: Credit or debit card, gift card number, or an order number (if applicable).
If they’re unable to find any trace of your purchase, ask that they issue you a merchandise credit for the lowest selling price within the past 365 calendar days.
They often will if you’re polite.
Any Exceptions to the 365-Day Return Policy?
Yes, there are a few big exception.
– Mattresses: If you purchase a mattress from IKEA, and don’t like it, you can’t simply return it for a refund.
You’ll have to exchange it for another mattress and you can only do this once within a 90-day window.
– Gift Cards: You cannot return gift cards to IKEA. You’ll have to sell them through a site like Raise.com if you want to get some money for them.
– Plants: These cannot be returned.
– Cut Fabric: Measure twice, cut once as cut fabric cannot be returned.
– Custom Countertops: These also cannot be returned.
– As-is Products: These usually are sold at a big discount and hence cannot be returned and are considered Final Sale.

Returning Furniture That’s Already Assembled
So if you finally get your stuff home (and spend an entire weekend assembling it) you CAN still return it to IKEA if you change your mind or it has a defect.
If you can return the item to IKEA yourself, they DO NOT require you to take it apart.
After you return it, they’ll put it in the “assembled” discount section for bargain shoppers to grab.
They state that items must be in unused and salable condition.
But the term “unused” is very subjective in this case. Technically, when you put a bookcase together and throw a book on it, it is used.
Let me know in the comments below if you’ve had trouble returning items to IKEA because of this.
From talking to several IKEA employees, they’re fairly generous in what they term as “used” and “salable” and will take back most items without a hassle.
PRO TIP: CAN’T GET THE ITEM BACK TO THE STORE YOURSELF?
IKEA has a Pick-It-Up option for you if you can’t get it back to the store yourself.
But keep in mind that if you want IKEA to come to your house and pick-it-up, you must disassembled the item first.
Also, an employee explained to me that there is a fee for this as well. She told me that the return pickup fee will be the same as the delivery fee.
If it was in-store purchase, then the pick-up fee will be calculated based on the distance you are from an IKEA store, and the size of the item.
Original Box Not Needed
If you threw away the original packaging or box you can still make the return.
I actually hit up IKEA live chat to verify this and was told, “you can return it in any box properly.”
Might be a good idea to keep the box if you haven’t assembled it yet as it’ll make returning it easier.
You Can Also Return Washed Bedding
From the comments, it seems you can return washed items as someone returned washed cushions without a problem.
I’m guessing if the washed item lost color, or seems defective, they would be much more likely to take it back.
PRO TIP: POLICY CAN CHANGE BY COUNTRY
Just to be clear, I live in the U.S. and this article is related to the return policy in the United States.
Be aware that other countries with an IKEA store definitely can have a different policy.
For example, Canada IKEA only gives you 90 days to return something that you opened, and many IKEA locations in Europe only allow 90 days to return stuff, opened or not.
So if you’re shopping at an IKEA not in the U.S. be sure to do some independent research so you know exactly what return policy you’re dealing with.
You Can Return Clearance and Bargain Corner Items
You can return these items, just not items marked as being sold “As-Is”.
This means you have nothing to lose when buying something on clearance that’s already been assembled and marked down.
Take it home, try it out, and if you don’t like it, just return it to the IKEA warehouse for a full refund.
You Have Zero Options After 365 Days
Unfortunately, you don’t have any return options after 365 days.
You’ll have to sell your IKEA items via Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, eBay, or a yard sale.

Returning Online Purchases Is Fairly Easy
When buying items from the IKEA website, your return options are slightly different.
Specifically, you only have 14 days after your purchase to return items via the mail, or home pickup for large items.
After 14 days, you’ll have to return online purchases to the IKEA warehouse.
Be sure to keep your online receipt or packing slip to make the return go smoothly.
Note: Items bought in-store CANNOT be returned via the mail or online. They must be brought back to your local IKEA.
How to Return a Gift to IKEA
If you have the gift receipt, no problem.
Simply return the item and receive store credit for the item’s purchase price.
I was told that if you ask for cash, instead of store credit, that may be okay.
Apparently there’s no policy in place either way and it’s left up to the discretion of the individual store.
If you don’t have the receipt, it becomes very difficult to return the item as they won’t even give you store credit.
I was told by an IKEA representative that the “purchase holder will need to contact IKEA or take the item back to the store as they have purchased the item.”
Ask the Reader: Have you used IKEA’s return policy in the past? Was it as awesome as it sounds or am I missing something?

Returning something from the bargain section doesn’t always happen. I had something delivered broken. The delivery folks claim it was broken when it was put in the truck. IKEA claimed I bought it as-is and refused to accept responsibility. I didn’t think to take a picture of it in the store so couldn’t claim that either they, or their delivery team broke it. Store Management in Calgary refused to take it back/refund it telling me I bought it as-is. Now I own a table with one broken off leg that I can’t use and have yet to find someone who can fix it. Fortunately, I only lost $50 plus tax. But my suggestion is: if you buy something from the as-is section take pictures of it before you leave the store, if you are having it delivered. Also, do not accept anything off a truck that appears damaged, tell the delivery people to take it back to IKEA. I likely would’ve gotten my money back if I hadn’t let them unload the damaged table but because I did and because I had no proof that it wasn’t damaged when I bought it, they claimed their As-Is Policy and refused to refund me or get me new table legs.
How long does it take for money to go back on your card after you cancelled an order online?
3-5 business days is pretty standard.
I tried to return an item today without a receipt that my daughter bought in Oct last year Paying cash .They refused to give me a credit note without proof of purchase. My daughter then looked at her bank statement and found a purchases from ikea in November . Can she provide this as proof of receipt even though she paid cash?
I bought a markus office chair delivered on the 4th May2020 for my son who has a bad back Unfortunately its not suitable. Due to the covid 19 I havent been able to send it back. How can I get it collected. Obviously its a large item ordered on line. It hasnt been opened but I also need a returns label. Please inform me. I cant get through on the phone.
Ordered 7 Billy bookshelves (they only allow delivery right now, not store pick up). THREE of the seven arrived BROKEN in half. My husband didn’t notice until opening the boxes the next day. Now we can’t reach Ikea by phone or email, and delivery guy says it’s the store’s problem. Lines for returns at store are an hour long…be wary of buying from ikea right now!! Any suggestions?
Here’s what I would do. Show up 15 minutes before the store opens and be the 1st or 2nd person in-line to make a return.
Please update your Ikea return information. As of October 22, 2020 you must have a receipt to return or exchange your purchases. Plant, custom countertops, cut fabric and As-Is items are not eligible for return.
Thanks Tams, article updated!
I made an online order for a curbside pickup. I was not able to pick up the item as I could not find the pick up location. Ikea said in their email they will automatically re-shelf item that is not picked up within 24 hours and refund to the original purchase payment. But I never received the refund. They made fraudulent claim that I picked up the item. How can I file a formal legal complaint to Ikea? I already called their customer service 5 times and they always say they will refund me, but they never did.
Do the Carpets are accepted for exchange?
Hi guys,If I bought something online, can I return it to a store???
I’ve been on the phone for an hour trying to return two chairs without the package. I bought a kitchen island that damaged and have no problem returning that. However as I’ve built the chairs that go with the island I can’t return as I threw out packaging. Soalb who was putting me on hold for a long time said I can’t have a manager ring me as they will tell me the same thing. So a hour waiting time. This is absolutely disgusting. Now I’m stuck with two chairs.
You need the packaging to make a return. It says so in their website
You need to have the item in an unopened box now for a return. IKEA Leeds refusing returns that have been opened even if they haven’t left the box! Ridiculous. Nothing on website to say policy has changed
I’ve just had the same happen to me. Bought a kallax unit, opened it to discover I’d picked up the wrong colour. I took it back thinking they’d swap it but no, I was refused.
Took items back the next day for a refund in Parma, still in the packages and was given a store credit, not a refund. You can’t call that a refund. I’d rather have taken the money and bought what I was looking for somewhere else.
Not okay.
Gisele
Today I returned a desk top minus the wrapping and it was accepted no problems
Took faulty clock back. Didn’t want refund. Just exchange or credit note as the item didn’t work and i don’t have my receipt. They refused and said I need to have proof of purchase even though I brought the faulty purchase item with me. They told me at the till they offer email. What a lie.. every time I shop no one ask for email
This is not true.
IKEA needs receipt period.
After reading this article, I went and waited in line for 2 hours, to be eventually told that IKEA needs receipt, period.
I have been refused a refund for some drawers that were not suitable, the box was opened but not damaged, the contents have not been removed or assembled. I was told point blank that they will not refund, I have been told different things from different advisors and still no joy. There’s nobody to speak to as a manager and I do not know what to do now.. £120 down, 3 100 mile round trips to try and sort it, 11 phone calls … 3 of which were ‘terminated by them because they wouldn’t resolve it’ very frustrated and annoyed! Any advice????
They won’t accept furniture if the tags are removed, I found that out the hard way yesterday. We bought an office chair, in order to put it together we had to remove the tags but when we took the chair back they refused to accept it because the tags were torn off (we even returned the tags separately) I said ‘that’s not in your policy’ they said ‘yes it says you can’t return anything that’s been modified and when you took the tags off you modified it’
This is not true at all
They said can’t return after assemble
And they said can’t trace with bank statement
NEVER REMOVE THE DO NOT REMOVE TAGS.
Seems pretty obvious right? But I didn’t think twice about ripping the tag hanging off the back of my new Söderhamn Chaise.
After a month of irritation, I couldn’t take the cushion not staying in place…so I packed it up into it’s original box and packaging along with my receipt.
They wouldn’t give me a refund or store credit because they cannot accept furniture that was altered — that includes taking off that gd tag.
What resolution did you come in the end? Im in the same boat. Ripped all those stupid tags and cant stand to these cushions
