Lowe’s Return Policy: Cut Through the Crap…It’s Getting Worse
On the surface, the Lowe’s return policy seems pretty straight forward. But once you dig into it a little bit you realize it has some nuances to it that are worth knowing, especially if you shop at Lowe’s regularly. I originally wrote this article back in 2017, and unfortunately their policy has gotten much worse in recent years, especially with how they handle no-receipt returns and major appliance returns. Let’s break it all down.
How Many Return Days Does Lowe’s Give You?
90 days.
The Lowe’s return policy stipulates that you have 90 days to return items to their store.
What is the Return Policy on Major Appliances?
48 HOURS.
You only have 48 HOURS from time of delivery or pickup to return major appliances.
(NOTE: This is new as of early 2023, it used to be 30 days on appliances.)
So you’ll want to inspect appliances VERY closely upon delivery and refuse delivery if you notice something you don’t like.
If you notice damage after the delivery team leaves, you have 2 days from the time of delivery to call Lowe’s at 1-800-445-6937 to report the damage -OR- any missing parts.
The MAJOR exception to this is appliances returned in original, unopened, undamaged, and factory-sealed packaging, they still have 30 days.
This got me wondering what qualifies as “Factory-Sealed Packaging” on a refrigerator that they take out of the box BEFORE they wheel it into your kitchen.
So I called Lowe’s and was told the following, “If you did not receive the refrigerator in a box, then you are not required to return it in a box. Do not worry about that. This only affects customers who throw the packaging away.”
This leads me to believe that they’re talking about small appliances that you bring home yourself. Things like a microwave, small refrigerator, or a mixer that come in a box when you buy them and bring them home. You have 30 days to return these items as long as you don’t open them.
Let me know in the comments if you’ve had a different experience on this new twist in their return policy.
PRO TIP: CONSIDER LOWE’S CREDIT CARD FOR APPLIANCE PURCHASE
If you’ve read any of my articles on here, you know I’m not a big fan of store credit cards as the APR is astronomical and the terms typically suck. The one big exception is with the MyLowe’s Rewards credit card. If you open a new credit card, not only will you get 20% off your first purchase, but you’ll get a 30 day return policy on major appliances.

Do You Need Your Receipt to Make a Return?
Yes.
This is where their return policy started changing FOR THE WORSE in mid-2023.
In the past, if you didn’t have your receipt, Lowe’s would attempt to use your credit card, MyLowe’s card, or phone number to find your order details and issue store credit.
Those days appear to be LONG GONE as I’ve personally had them refuse my return twice when I didn’t have my receipt and they couldn’t find my order.
The last time I tried this type of return they would NOT even attempt to look up my order and I was told that their return policy regarding no-receipt returns is changing and rolling out to all stores by early-2024.
I was told that they were getting hit hard by scammers trying to return stolen merchandise, or used products well past 90 days, and they have changed their return policy because of this.
It’s too bad that a small percentage of returners have ruined their once useful policy for the rest of us.
Note: As of January 2024, from talking to many Lowe’s shoppers, this new policy is still being rolled out nationwide and some stores still have the old return policy posted but are adhering to the “new” policy and not allowing ANY returns without a receipt.
Let me know in the comments if your local Lowe’s is adhering to the old or new policy regarding this issue.
PRO TIP: ALWAYS GET RECEIPT EMAILED TO YOU
When checking out, always opt to get a printed receipt and one sent to your email. Then create a “Lowe’s” folder in your email account and drag all your receipts into it so you can quickly retrieve a receipt when you need it.

What If You Paid with Cash or a Check?
You will DEFINITELY need your receipt to get a refund or exchange if you use cash or a personal check.
The days of Lowe’s looking up your purchase with your phone number, or Lowe’s account, are long gone it appears.
Obviously this only applies to in-store purchases.
Are There Other Exceptions to the 90 Days?
Yes, there are quite a few exceptions and here they are…
Winter/Holiday Seasonal Items – Must be returned by December 31st of the same holiday season.
TVs and Electronics – 30 days. Does Lowe’s actually sell TVs?
Outdoor Power Equipment – 30 days.
Trailers – 30 days.
Air Conditioners and Evaporative Coolers – 30 days.
Water Heaters – 30 days.
Paint – 30 days.
Plants – 365 days. More on this below.
FYI: You can only return trailers to a Lowe’s store in the same state that you bought it.
Can I Return Used Outdoor Power Equipment?
If you bought a lawn mower, chain saw, weed eater, blower, pretty much anything that takes gasoline, I was told by a manager that you can return it within 30 days.
But you MUST drain all the gas from it before you bring it back and you MUST have the receipt.
What About Online Purchases?
The same 90-day return policy exists on purchases made via Lowes.com.
Most items bought online come with a prepaid shipping label which is WAY cool.
Just repackage the item with the original box, manual, and parts and send it back at no charge.
Or even easier, return the item to your local Lowe’s store if you have one in your area.
Unfortunately, when you return an item via the mail you’re out the original shipping charges (if any).

Can You Return Items Bought In-Store via the Mail?
If taking items back to the store is not convenient, you can indeed return items via mail.
Because you won’t have a prepaid shipping label, you’ll have to call Lowe’s directly at 1-800-445-6937 to initiate the return process.
What About Defects That Happen After 90 Days?
You just might be eligible for some relief if your product/appliance has a manufacturer defect after your 90 day return window expires.
Just call Lowe’s at 1-888-77-LOWES to schedule a factory-certified service appointment.
If the repair is covered by the manufacturer’s warranty you won’t be charged a cent.
What’s the Return Policy on Plants?
1 year from date of purchase.
This 1-year “plant guarantee” does not include annuals or clearance plants.
Just bring the dead plant back along with your receipt and you’ll get your money back.
If you still have the plant’s original container bring that back too, it will make the return process much easier.
PRO TIP: CLEVER “RECEIPT HACK” WHEN BUYING PLANTS
When buying plants from Lowe’s, keep your receipt in a save place. When buying indoor plants, my favorite tip is to put it in a Ziploc bag and tape it to the bottom of the container so you’ll never lose it.
Gift Cards…Can You Return Them?
The only way you can return a lost or stolen gift card is by presenting the original receipt.
Once presented, Lowe’s will reissue a new gift card for the remaining balance.
4 Lowe’s Return Policy Insider Hacks:
Here are some insider tips and hacks to make their return policy work best for you.
1. Return Item When Competitor has Lower Price?
If you notice that a local competitor like Home Depot or Ace Hardware has the item you bought at a lower price, you can get a price-match without returning the item. Just bring in proof of the lower price and you’ll get cash back for the difference PLUS an extra 10%.
2. Double Dip Your Savings with Store Credit (Not a Return)
Shop online at Lowe’s.com, but first use my favorite cashback site TopCashBack as they’ll give you 5% back on your Lowe’s online purchase.
When you’re checking out online, choose “store pickup” then stop by your local Lowe’s and pick-up your order.
Next, walk around the store for a few minutes, then return to the customer service desk and ask for “store credit” as you changed your mind on the purchase.
Result? You’ll still score the 5% cashback and have store credit to use on your next purchase. Rinse and repeat.
3. Lowe’s vs. The Home Depot
Whose return policy is better?
From talking to store employees, it seems to come down to individual store managers and how they handle returns.
Some managers (at both retailers) are very willing to bend over backwards to keep the customer happy and accept a return on darn near any product, regardless of age or condition.
The takeaway here is to get familiar with both retailers in your area and figure out which store is more lenient on returns (ESPECIALLY RETURNS WITHOUT A RECEIPT) and take your business there.
4. Pay Attention When They Scan Your Stuff
When you’re checking out and have multiple items that are only slightly different (color, size, etc) make sure they scan each item individually.
If they try and take a shortcut and scan the same item repeatedly, thinking they’re all the same, it will be VERY difficult to try and return any of the items as the SKU won’t be on your receipt.

What if the appliance fails within the 30 days but the issue is not realized until after 30 days. I called for service within the 30 days as the fridge failed. Can I still get a full refund
I have discovered that because I have returned to many internet orders ( to the store or shipped back) there is a hold on ME from internet ordering. I CAN NOT place an order online as I blocks me. Doesn’t matter if I use my Lowes credit card ( paid up and excellent credit) or my Visa or American Express card. I am blocked.
After numerous call to Lowes and numerous transfers to” supervisors”
I asked the question “does Lowes have a policy regarding blocking internet purchases if someone had a lot of returns”. The answer I got was ” I don’t have that information in front of me”. Now I can go into my local store and make purchases or place on line orders through the store but no matter what credit card I use (all in good standing) I am blocked from ordering on line. It’s always ” turned over to IT for investigation” but never resolved. It has been happening for several months…
Lowes is full of it I was away on business had the contractor to take the item I baought an they gave him a in store credit my husband was not pleased about some of his work fired him I went to use the card now keep in mine I bought the things originally that got this in store credit they told me I need the guy who returned the stuff so he can show his I D Home Depot did not give us no problem same case shop at Home Depot Lowes is full of it
punctuality much?
Did you mean “punctuate” ?
Doh!
SAME – Lowes has NO customer service and terrible management
That is the contractor’s fault, not Lowe’s. When he returned the items, they even gave him a slip of paper with the return receipt that stated his ID would be required when using an in-store credit that was obtained by registering his ID when he made the return.
home depot also ask for your id on a store credt
If you ever need to use store credit that was issued to someone else, simply have the person whose ID is linked to the in store credit send you a picture of the QR code on the back of their ID. It can be scanned from your phone the same as from it’s original source. There is no one checking to make sure that the ID belongs to the person using the credit.
They adopted this whole procedure to discourage people from stealing easily stolen products that together equal a decent sum of money, utilizing the no receipt return policy, and then selling the gift card at a percentage of its value.
I’m pretty sure this type of thing is the same reason Coinstar quickly changed their minds about their kiosks that would pay cash on the spot for gift cards from major retailers, but I digress.
Of course, once these perspective thieves read this reply or realize on their own that they simply need to provide whomever they are selling the store credit to with a pic of their QR code, it’ll be back to the drawing board for the loss prevention folk at Lowe’s, Home Depot, etc.
A quick afterthought: I wonder why these retailers don’t hire any of the better thieves that they know are getting over on them but can’t ever seem to catch as consultants or something along those lines to help better their defenses against shoplifting? I mean, the FBI hired Leonardo DiCaprio’s character from “Catch Me if You Can” to fight check fraud…

“Double Dip Your Savings with Store Credit (Not a Return)”
That’s pretty pathetic. Intentionally plan to rip off a retailer (how do you think those rebates get funded). I’ll bet you spend half your time complaining about high prices while, basically, stealing from the same retailers.
Im with you Jim its good to get a good deal but when you are that low to walk out one door and right back in just to get over on someone is pathetic . Just another scammer
I agree, but Lowe’s will get even. They advertise Energizer batteries with a $5 rebate (good for up to four rebates), then only give you two rebates and reply, “Sorry, there is no supervisor available to speak with you,” when you call to complain.
Just a heads up the Christmas item return deadline got moved up to December 26th this yeah not the 31st.
“Double Dip Your Savings with Store Credit (Not a Return)”
That’s intentionally ripping off LOWES….. but it doesn’t work as you advertise it anyways. That’s because you cannot use store credit (Lowes merchandise card) online. You can only use credit cards or gift cards online.
This doesn’t rip off Lowes at all. If you spend $30 online at Lowes.com using the cash back site, you receive 5% cash back from the cash back site ($1.50). Then you return that item and receive your $30 back. Lowes hasn’t lost anything, but you’ve gained $1.50 from the cash back website. It’s really a lot of work for little return unless you’re going to buy something expensive. Even then it only gains you something if you continue to buy expensive things and return them.
Lowes no longer offers additional 10% on price matching. Signage and verbiage has been removed from website and in store.
Not true what so ever! In Ontario we can price match plus additional 10% off on anything in the store provided it’s also in stock at competitive store.
You are cute Ashley
I bought a gift card for Carrabba at Lowe’s for a Christmas gift for my sister. I have original receipt but she has not received it in the mail. Can I get credit for it or get a replacement card. I purchased it with a Lowe’s credit card. Please help me
Yes. Just bring receipt to store and say it was lost in mail. They should void that one and give you a new one.
They only do that for Lowe’s gift cards, not 3rd party cards.
My husband returned his Christmas gift, and they would not give him the money, because it was charged on the credit card, however the credit card has a 0 balance. I owe nothing on my credit card, so I don’t want a credit. How do I get my money back.
Hmm, would they at least give you store credit?
Even if the balance is zero, it can still be refunded. You will have a negative balance. Just use the negative balance for something else needed. No retailer is going to refund cash from a credit card transaction, simply because this could be an easy scam for credit card fraud related activity. The only time I ever seen this done was with Circuit City by mail, and they would issue a check. Of course Circuit City is out of business now…take that how you want, lol.
Just contact your credit card company and they should send you a check if you have a negative balance. Or just use the card for whatever next to bring balance back to zero.
Actually stores WILL give cash if you paid by credit card here’s the catch…you must have that credit card with you! If u ask for cash back though, they’ll DEFINITELY give it!
Only if that card was a debit VISA. Lowe’s will NOT give you cash back on a typical credit card purchase.
Tell your credit card company to send you a check.
I bought items in a box. There were 10 inside the box. I used 4. Can I return 6 back at lowes?
I need more info. What is the item in the “box”?
Technically yes, if they have individual barcodes than the contractor pack box you purchased. But this is again attempting fraud if you got a large pack of 10, simply because buying 10 together is cheaper than buying 10 separate.
Fraud may be a little much. But Lowes might adjust the price of the 4 you used to original non bulk price before giving you a refund.
Hello I purchase an Wedelt gas air compressure about 2 years ago with a in store credit card given to me from my grandmother. The air is low can I take it back to Lowes for an exchange?
You can always try. If not, check manufacturers warranty and if that is expired, check your credit card you used. A lot of them extend warranty’s for a year or two.
I wanted to try out a garden tractor for my wife to see if it would perform and she would like it. the answer “No way!” I am expected to just lay down my money and if it doesn’t work … too bad. Huh? Nope if it has had gas put in it there is NO return, this goes for lawn mowers, chain saws anything that has gasoline put in it. Guess I’m dealing at Home Depot there they will accept it back as long as the gas is drained out of it. Lowes expected me to pay out $2500.00 without knowing if it will work in my yard for my wife. Probably the last time I shop at Lowes. Jimmy Johnson get a new sponsor!!
Strange. I asked a store manager and they told me as long as you drain out the gas you can return it within 30 days with a receipt.
Wow.
Do you also want to try out the Christmas Ham to see if your wife will like it or not before you decide to pay for it? What is wrong with you?
Yes, you should be expected to pay out any amount, without knowing if it will work in your yard for your wife.
1) you should do your research before making a purchase
2) you probably should have found someone better to wifey up to. She sounds, just, terrific.
That’s not what he meant, try reading it again.
A friend owed me money and she gave me a in store credit that she had will I b able to use it
You have to use her license number
We have purchased 1000’s of dollars worth of products over the past 7 months as we are in the middle of a renovation… there are 3 individuals purchasing items for the home… and often when returning an item… I do not have a receipt… as a result… after $1000’s+++ of merchandise purchased … when I went to return a light the other day I was told I was on a “list” and needed to contact via Telephone to be reinstated…. so I called… and received a recording … of which none of the options applied to what my call was in regards to..
I will have my guys purchase at HOME DEPOT moving forward… this is an unacceptable policy… especially since we have purchased so much from your stores
My aunt is doing renovation and there are several of us who pick things up, we just use email receipts with her email so she has them all
Keep your receipt. ALL MAJOR RETAILERS put you on lists and/or watch you for returning a multitude of high dollar items with no receipt. If you’ve ever worked retail, you’d understand that this is how 90% of people steal money from retailers. They’re trying to mitigate theft. If you can manage a renovation, I’m sure you can manage some pieces of paper.
Home Depot does the exact same thing so it won’t be any different going there.
How many days do I have to wait to get,a cash refund on a personal check purchase?
Hi can someone help i made purchase with credit card i lost my card a day later but i need to return item can they give me cash back
They should be able to at least give you store credit.
If you get a new credit card sent to you, it will be close to the original credit card number. Lowe’s uses a large company for processing payments so a knowledgeable associate should know that they can put the return on the new card and the processing company knows it’s still you.
I can but why should I spend my time managing receipts. We live 45 from town so. We often bought several styles not knowing what would work until we got home. Now I’m stuck with merchandise I don’t need. They don’t have any exclusions on me spending my money only giving it back. The door should swing both ways. NEVER SHOP AT LOWES EVER EVER AGAIN.
So you knowingly purchased extra items in different styles to try at home with the intent to return what you don’t use. Yet you ask why you should bother managing receipts? And whine that you have merchandise you don’t need? And you’re mad at Lowe’s for this. They probably lost more in resources dealing with you at the service desk and restocking your items than whatever your net expenditure ended up being- I’m sure they’ll be glad if you don’t come back (sigh, but you will).
