Lowe’s Return Policy: Cut Through the Crap…It’s Getting Worse
On the surface, the Lowe’s 90-day return policy seems pretty straight forward. But once you dig into it a little bit you realize it has some nuances to it that are worth knowing, especially if you shop at Lowe’s regularly. I originally wrote this article back in 2017, and unfortunately their policy has gotten much worse in recent years, especially with how they handle no-receipt returns and major appliance returns. Let’s break it all down.
Lowe’s Give You 90-Days to Make a Return
The Lowe’s return policy stipulates that you have 90 days to return items to their store on the vast majority of thigs they sell.
Return Policy on Major Appliances Sucks
You only have 48 HOURS from time of delivery or pickup to return major appliances.
(NOTE: This is new as of early 2023, it used to be 30 days on appliances.)
So you’ll want to inspect appliances VERY closely upon delivery and refuse delivery if you notice something you don’t like.
If you notice damage after the delivery team leaves, you have 2 days from the time of delivery to call Lowe’s at 1-800-445-6937 to report the damage -OR- any missing parts.
The MAJOR exception to this is appliances returned in original, unopened, undamaged, and factory-sealed packaging, they still have 30 days.
This got me wondering what qualifies as “Factory-Sealed Packaging” on a refrigerator that they take out of the box BEFORE they wheel it into your kitchen.
So I called Lowe’s and was told the following, “If you did not receive the refrigerator in a box, then you are not required to return it in a box. Do not worry about that. This only affects customers who throw the packaging away.”
This leads me to believe that they’re talking about small appliances that you bring home yourself. Things like a microwave, small refrigerator, or a mixer that come in a box when you buy them and bring them home. You have 30 days to return these items as long as you don’t open them.
Let me know in the comments if you’ve had a different experience on this new twist in their return policy.
PRO TIP: CONSIDER LOWE’S CREDIT CARD FOR APPLIANCE PURCHASE
If you’ve read any of my articles on here, you know I’m not a big fan of store credit cards as the APR is astronomical and the terms typically suck.
The one big exception is with the MyLowe’s Rewards credit card. If you open a new credit card, not only will you get 20% off your first purchase, but you’ll get a 30 day return policy on major appliances.

You Need Your Receipt to Make a Return
This is where their return policy started changing FOR THE WORSE in mid-2023.
In the past, if you didn’t have your receipt, Lowe’s would attempt to use your credit card, MyLowe’s card, or phone number to find your order details and issue store credit.
Those days appear to be LONG GONE as I’ve personally had them refuse my return twice when I didn’t have my receipt and they couldn’t find my order.
The last time I tried this type of return they would NOT even attempt to look up my order and I was told that their return policy regarding no-receipt returns is changing and rolling out to all stores by early-2024.
I was told that they were getting hit hard by scammers trying to return stolen merchandise, or used products well past 90 days, and they have changed their return policy because of this.
It’s too bad that a small percentage of returners have ruined their once useful policy for the rest of us.
Note: As of January 2024, from talking to many Lowe’s shoppers, this new policy is still being rolled out nationwide and some stores still have the old return policy posted but are adhering to the “new” policy and not allowing ANY returns without a receipt.
Let me know in the comments if your local Lowe’s is adhering to the old or new policy regarding this issue.
PRO TIP: ALWAYS GET RECEIPT EMAILED TO YOU
When checking out, always opt to get a printed receipt and one sent to your email. Then create a “Lowe’s” folder in your email account and drag all your receipts into it so you can quickly retrieve a receipt when you need it.

Need Receipt When Paying with Cash or a Check
You will DEFINITELY need your receipt to get a refund or exchange if you use cash or a personal check.
The days of Lowe’s looking up your purchase with your phone number, or Lowe’s account, are long gone it appears.
Obviously this only applies to in-store purchases.
Exceptions to the 90 Days
There are quite a few exceptions and here they are…
Winter/Holiday Seasonal Items – Must be returned by December 31st of the same holiday season.
TVs and Electronics – 30 days. Does Lowe’s actually sell TVs?
Outdoor Power Equipment – 30 days.
Trailers – 30 days.
Air Conditioners and Evaporative Coolers – 30 days.
Water Heaters – 30 days.
Paint – 30 days.
Plants – 365 days. More on this below.
FYI: You can only return trailers to a Lowe’s store in the same state that you bought it.
PRO TIP: ALWAYS GET A LOWE’S PRICE MATCH
If you notice that a local competitor like Home Depot or Ace Hardware has the item you bought at a lower price, you can get a price-match without returning the item.
Just bring in proof of the lower price and you’ll get cash back for the difference.
Returning Used Outdoor Power Equipment
If you bought a lawn mower, chain saw, weed eater, blower, pretty much anything that takes gasoline, I was told by a manager that you can return it within 30 days.
But you MUST drain all the gas from it before you bring it back and you MUST have the receipt.
What About Online Purchases?
The same 90-day return policy exists on purchases made via Lowes.com.
Most items bought online come with a prepaid shipping label which is WAY cool.
Just repackage the item with the original box, manual, and parts and send it back at no charge.
Or even easier, return the item to your local Lowe’s store if you have one in your area.
Unfortunately, when you return an item via the mail you’re out the original shipping charges (if any).

WHOSE POLICY IS BETTER? LOWE’S VS. HOME DEPOT
From talking to store employees, it seems to come down to individual store managers and how they handle returns.
Some managers (at both retailers) are very willing to bend over backwards to keep the customer happy and accept a return on darn near any product, regardless of age or condition.
The takeaway here is to get familiar with both retailers in your area and figure out which store is more lenient on returns (ESPECIALLY RETURNS WITHOUT A RECEIPT) and take your business there.
Returning Items Bought In-Store via the Mail
If taking items back to the store is not convenient, you can indeed return items via mail.
Because you won’t have a prepaid shipping label, you’ll have to call Lowe’s directly at 1-800-445-6937 to initiate the return process.
Defects That Happen After 90 Days
You just might be eligible for some relief if your product/appliance has a manufacturer defect after your 90 day return window expires.
Just call Lowe’s at 1-888-77-LOWES to schedule a factory-certified service appointment.
If the repair is covered by the manufacturer’s warranty you won’t be charged a cent.
PRO TIP: PAY ATTENTION WHEN THEY SCAN YOUR STUFF
When you’re checking out and have multiple items that are only slightly different (color, size, etc) make sure they scan each item individually.
If they try and take a shortcut and scan the same item repeatedly, thinking they’re all the same, it will be VERY difficult to try and return any of the items as the SKU won’t be on your receipt.
Return Policy on Plants is Great
1 year from date of purchase.
This 1-year “plant guarantee” does not include annuals or clearance plants.
Just bring the dead plant back along with your receipt and you’ll get your money back.
If you still have the plant’s original container bring that back too, it will make the return process much easier.
PRO TIP: CLEVER “RECEIPT HACK” WHEN BUYING PLANTS
When buying plants from Lowe’s, keep your receipt in a save place. When buying indoor plants, my favorite tip is to put it in a Ziploc bag and tape it to the bottom of the container so you’ll never lose it.
Gift Cards…Can You Return Them?
The only way you can return a lost or stolen gift card is by presenting the original receipt.
Once presented, Lowe’s will reissue a new gift card for the remaining balance.

I have been a longtime Lowe’s customer. I do all my shopping for materials there and I tell all my customers to shop there. I am the soul owner and worker for branham plumbing and more. I buy my materials as needed. I can’t afford to stock pill materials so any chance I get to return something I do so. In am going threw a divorce and she had taken everything. I just finished up a little job and went to return the left over when I discovered I didn’t have my receipt. I tried to return them anyway and I wasn’t aloud to do so .I felt like I was being judged. Now in stuck with these materials and no money to purchase materials for my next job. All I can say now is HOME_______ DEPOT
Sole owner
I purchased a dishwasher in a NC store on a Monday. They gave me a Sunday delivery date. The next day they changed delivery to Monday. Then to Tuesday. I work and got so frustrated, on Friday, I called a store in California (3-hour time difference, my Lowes had already closed) to cancel the order before it gets too far along to cancel it. I paid with my debit card and two merchandise cards. I called on Wednesday to find out the status of my refund. Up to 5 days is the norm so I was told but heard it can be done in 48 hours. I was put on hold and told it might take up to 5-10 days because it was debit not credit card. I was also informed that another store cancelled the order on Monday (I cancelled on Friday before). After a 40-minute (most of it on hold), call I was told that the amount I paid by debit (the majority of the total) would be expedited to my account and the remainder would be put on a merch car and mailed to me.
Shortly thereafter, I received an email stating the total purchase was being returned on a merchandise card and mailed to me. I expect to be refunded the way I paid! I called, was placed on a 15-minute hold, and again told I would be refunded but first they needed to create a P.O. number for the card, then cancel it then call me again for my debit card number then sent a merch card for the remainder. At this point, I don’t even want a merch card. I never want to deal with Lowes again! IT is now TWO WEEKS that I have cancelled my order and still do not have my refund. This is insanity!
No more Lowes for me after all theses years, I buy so much from them and I do lose receipts from time to time. Since they are on hard times or what ever , they don’t even offer store credit any longer . Well GOOD BYE Lowes and hello Home depot .
Lowe’s is an absolute nightmare. You couldn’t pay me to buy a lightbulb from them.
I want to know if I can return the Christmas tree we just bought on Sunday. It is terrible. It is loosing needles by the second and doesn’t even soak up water!!! How terrible to ruin our Christmas with this obviously awful tree!! We haven’t even put lights on it yet, it is so dry.
Yes, I’m sure they’ll be happy to exchange it for a fresher tree.
So I purchased a snow blower in July this year. It was a good sale and I’m Canadian enough said. It’s December 25 now I still have not needed to use it in fact plastic wrap is ok it still. My issue now is I’ve been gifted a snow blower and would like to return it to Lowe’s but it’s 5 months later – does this seasonal item fall into a special category for return since it was summer when purchased leaving us at mercy that it was 100% in working order first snow fall in December? Some solid advice needed!
If I bought something with cash and can’t make it back to the store, will they issue me some type of mail check so I don’t have to get store credit?
I bought a grill in the box yesterday and is missing pieces, can I return it and get my refund with receipt?
I bought two mister buddy propane heaters in November, I realized they smell too much and want to return them to lowes to get my money back so I can get a wave 8 which doesn’t smell, its been more then 90 days do you think they will let me? My my lowes card has the purchases on it.
I returned plywood i bought (with all the rain i needed extra and couldnt afford extra trips back n forth). I stuck my card in for the return and was told 3 business days to see the money back. After three days i called and was told by 2 diff employees that it could be 3-5 days. After 7 days i called and was told it could be 15 days by someone else. I called the bank and they said 5 days tops but if i wanted them to deal w it then they would have to issue new card to me but id get the money. Such a shame because its this kind of business that will make me shop at menards when they open across the street.
Lowe’s issues the return to your card immediately, it’s then up to the bank on how long it takes to go back to your card/account.
I MADE A PURCHASE ONLINE FOR A FREEZER DO NOT LIKE THE INTERIOR, IT WAS A TRUCK DELIVERY . HOW CAN I RETURN IT
How do I return a ride in lawn mower? It was delivered to my house via truck
Call your local Lowe’s and they’ll set up a return for you.
I tried to return a paint sprayer tip a hey Graco 415 spray tip me and my girlfriend were both denied which I know we don’t have too many returns they said it was because of the item that was the $28 item why can’t I return it it’s in the package it’s the wrong tip for the paint sprayer why can’t I return it I want to get other merchandise please call me or email 269-503-1178
Because it’s considered a “high-theft” item & will need a receipt.
Yep
If I ordered an appliance online and Lowe’s did not prompt in the order process the full needing of cords, so I returned the appliance as without the cord it is useless, do they change a $20 fee. I got an almost full refund less $20, but really it was Lowe’s fault not mine and the delivery guy said they didn’t have the cord in stock anyway, so they shouldn’t have sent it without it.
Home Depot return for appliances is strictly 48 hours from delivery time includes nights/weekends.
They have no installers only sign up sheet for locals to answer. All 2 said only do big jobs (1 big company wanted $1000 to install toilet current already uninstalled), no time to get installer & delivery people not allowed to install won’t take away if not already uninstalled. (HD was surprised they didn’t install & haul away.) Can’t choose delivery day but they can delay a week, so no way to plan.
Week later son back in town to install & won’t dry at all no matter what. Of course KitchenAid/Whirlpool service man excuse was they have no heaters, you must keep water 140° and have no dryer, government won’t allow…, even though a button choice is “extended dry” and other reviews say completely dry when open theirs.
He kept deflecting into nonsense reasons, need to use oil bottle to run off water to base. (Who wants oil on their dishes) He insisted not a lemon returned, tho he would have no idea.
However: Water leaked out when taken out box, (service man prepared with “all are tested”. Independent dealers called said no should never happen) he said orange manual was missing, a hose was missing when son installed I had to get one AND we tried to put in oil he emphasized as reason won’t dry & it said FULL. His excuse of no oil?…he didn’t even check, came prepared with excuses not to replace. So someone has my manual, hose, put oil in & returned when tried & wouldn’t dry.
Even with 1 yr warranty, was warned next time I call they will charge service call (any time they find “nothing wrong” you pay not warranty)…will not replace even tho obvious lemon.
All my past KitchenAids dried without a drop left. Other reviewers who’s dishwasher didn’t dry had rust & mildew & rotting cabinet & floor wood later down the line. Can only put on curb & start over with independent dealer responsible for service & own guarantee/replace.
All other appliances in home are extreme lemons from ABT so tried HD.
*If you get a discount anywhere item comes from the lemon returned factory.
Wish I had gone to Lowe’s with 30 day return. Menards is 7 days, if defective.
Should have gone here: “Most large and small appliances fall under Walmart’s standard 90-day return policy, including dishwashers, slow cookers, toaster ovens, and vacuum cleaners, and can be returned for any reason.”
In March I bought 35 trek 16 ft boards. I also bought 25 12 foot boards aling with 20 8 ft ft boards. I also bought 2 buckets of clips – big box of screws. After I finally finished the job last week I took 4 8 ft trek boards back to the store. They told me I can’t return them because of the 90 day return policy. What a bunch of crap. Very rude and uncaring people you have working for you. I’m an old retired guy and money is important to me
Bring it back without a recipet and say you paid cash for them within the 90 days. They cant look it up that way and youll at least get store credit
tried that today and was denied
Ok so me and my huaband went to to lwes to return a battery pack that just isnt working correctly it also isnt the one we wanted so we bring it in in hopes to get it returned and put the mo ey towards the bigger battery charger(the one you would use to jump your car) back they 1st gavr a bad attitude right off the bat about a blade that was missing from a seperate purchase we did get that but as we are trying to return the pack the woman eho had just a horrible demeanor and seemed like she lived to say no looked at it said has this been used we said we tried to use it it isnt working properly it came charged which was why we decided to get it but the others looked about the same she made a big issue she had someone go look at the other packed because we knew they looked the dame as if returned and put back on the floor and without and explanation they said we are not returning it and she was extatic it was horrible customer service but we just wanted to get a bigger more expensive one and pay the difference she seemed to have an issue with us at first glance i didnt realise they could deny a purchase when you have a receipt you have everything for it proof you bought it just a few days ago ect…what can i do…?
Go back to the store and ask to speak to the manager and tell him/her about your bad customer service experience.
Hey, try using some punctuation, it helps.
I just wanna say one thing, you gotta understand the point of view from the other side. These people are putting up with a**hole customers 8 hours a day that treat them like crap and arguing with them. Their defenses are up and the are just giving back what they have been taking all day. So give these people a break, i couldnt do their job 8 hours a day, five days a week, could you?
yes i could , i did it for lowes for three years . the whole customer is always right is no longer the caes.
Update re: holiday (Christmas) items… Lowe’s does not allow returns on any holiday items after December 26. This policy seems ridiculous to me – allowing only one day after Christmas for returns. I bought an item two weeks ago. I have my receipt. The item is in the original box and has not been used. Yet it is 12/31 and I am unable to return the item. So frustrating.
I’m in the same situation. The store associates said they had signs up for weeks and that they still had them on the registers. They were basically calling me a liar when I pointed out that they never had the signs up when I made my original purchase. I walked over to the registers since they said they still had them there, but there were no signs about their return policy on seasonal items. The whole experience with that store seemed deceptive based on what they were telling me.
They also said they had the return policy online when I made the purchase but they did not! Had notification been there I would have hurried to return them sooner! I knew when I received it I was not happy with the item!
I’m in the same boat! I was going to try to use the return shipping label but there was not one in the package of the unused item. What is the shipping address of the company so I can return this unused, unopened holiday item? I was at the store on the 27th and they wouldn’t return it. Now I am going to attempt to mail it back to them in hopes they will just do the damn return and credit my card. I am a property manager. I’m responsible for the maintenance of over 100 properties. I spend tens of thousands of dollars each year at lowes. I would like a refund of $45 for an unused, unwanted item. Does anyone know the address I can send it back to?

Can I sell my lowes inside store credit
Yes, but you have to meet the person at the store and show your ID when they make their purchase. You can’t just sell it by giving it to someone, it’s tied to your license.
