Lowe’s Return Policy: Cut Through the Crap…It’s Getting Worse

Updated: October 8, 2024

On the surface, the Lowe’s return policy seems pretty straight forward. But once you dig into it a little bit you realize it has some nuances to it that are worth knowing, especially if you shop at Lowe’s regularly. I originally wrote this article back in 2017, and unfortunately their policy has gotten much worse in recent years, especially with how they handle no-receipt returns and major appliance returns. Let’s break it all down.

Lowe's Return Policy: Make It Work For You (and Rock Your Next DIY Project)

How Many Return Days Does Lowe’s Give You?

90 days.

The Lowe’s return policy stipulates that you have 90 days to return items to their store.

What is the Return Policy on Major Appliances?

48 HOURS.

You only have 48 HOURS from time of delivery or pickup to return major appliances.

(NOTE: This is new as of early 2023, it used to be 30 days on appliances.)

So you’ll want to inspect appliances VERY closely upon delivery and refuse delivery if you notice something you don’t like.

If you notice damage after the delivery team leaves, you have 2 days from the time of delivery to call Lowe’s at 1-800-445-6937 to report the damage -OR- any missing parts.

The MAJOR exception to this is appliances returned in original, unopened, undamaged, and factory-sealed packaging, they still have 30 days.

This got me wondering what qualifies as “Factory-Sealed Packaging” on a refrigerator that they take out of the box BEFORE they wheel it into your kitchen.

So I called Lowe’s and was told the following, “If you did not receive the refrigerator in a box, then you are not required to return it in a box. Do not worry about that. This only affects customers who throw the packaging away.”

This leads me to believe that they’re talking about small appliances that you bring home yourself. Things like a microwave, small refrigerator, or a mixer that come in a box when you buy them and bring them home. You have 30 days to return these items as long as you don’t open them.

Let me know in the comments if you’ve had a different experience on this new twist in their return policy.

PRO TIP: CONSIDER LOWE’S CREDIT CARD FOR APPLIANCE PURCHASE

If you’ve read any of my articles on here, you know I’m not a big fan of store credit cards as the APR is astronomical and the terms typically suck. The one big exception is with the MyLowe’s Rewards credit card. If you open a new credit card, not only will you get 20% off your first purchase, but you’ll get a 30 day return policy on major appliances.

Do You Need Your Receipt to Make a Return?

Yes.

This is where their return policy started changing FOR THE WORSE in mid-2023.

In the past, if you didn’t have your receipt, Lowe’s would attempt to use your credit card, MyLowe’s card, or phone number to find your order details and issue store credit.

Those days appear to be LONG GONE as I’ve personally had them refuse my return twice when I didn’t have my receipt and they couldn’t find my order.

The last time I tried this type of return they would NOT even attempt to look up my order and I was told that their return policy regarding no-receipt returns is changing and rolling out to all stores by early-2024.

I was told that they were getting hit hard by scammers trying to return stolen merchandise, or used products well past 90 days, and they have changed their return policy because of this.

It’s too bad that a small percentage of returners have ruined their once useful policy for the rest of us.

Note: As of January 2024, from talking to many Lowe’s shoppers, this new policy is still being rolled out nationwide and some stores still have the old return policy posted but are adhering to the “new” policy and not allowing ANY returns without a receipt.

Let me know in the comments if your local Lowe’s is adhering to the old or new policy regarding this issue.

PRO TIP: ALWAYS GET RECEIPT EMAILED TO YOU

When checking out, always opt to get a printed receipt and one sent to your email. Then create a “Lowe’s” folder in your email account and drag all your receipts into it so you can quickly retrieve a receipt when you need it.

What If You Paid with Cash or a Check?

You will DEFINITELY need your receipt to get a refund or exchange if you use cash or a personal check.

The days of Lowe’s looking up your purchase with your phone number, or Lowe’s account, are long gone it appears.

Obviously this only applies to in-store purchases.

Are There Other Exceptions to the 90 Days?

Yes, there are quite a few exceptions and here they are…

Winter/Holiday Seasonal Items – Must be returned by December 31st of the same holiday season.

TVs and Electronics – 30 days. Does Lowe’s actually sell TVs?

Outdoor Power Equipment – 30 days.

Trailers – 30 days.

Air Conditioners and Evaporative Coolers – 30 days.

Water Heaters – 30 days.

Paint – 30 days.

Plants – 365 days. More on this below.

FYI: You can only return trailers to a Lowe’s store in the same state that you bought it.

Can I Return Used Outdoor Power Equipment?

If you bought a lawn mower, chain saw, weed eater, blower, pretty much anything that takes gasoline, I was told by a manager that you can return it within 30 days.

But you MUST drain all the gas from it before you bring it back and you MUST have the receipt.

What About Online Purchases?

The same 90-day return policy exists on purchases made via Lowes.com.

Most items bought online come with a prepaid shipping label which is WAY cool.

Just repackage the item with the original box, manual, and parts and send it back at no charge.

Or even easier, return the item to your local Lowe’s store if you have one in your area.

Unfortunately, when you return an item via the mail you’re out the original shipping charges (if any).

Can You Return Items Bought In-Store via the Mail?

If taking items back to the store is not convenient, you can indeed return items via mail.

Because you won’t have a prepaid shipping label, you’ll have to call Lowe’s directly at 1-800-445-6937 to initiate the return process.

What About Defects That Happen After 90 Days?

You just might be eligible for some relief if your product/appliance has a manufacturer defect after your 90 day return window expires.

Just call Lowe’s at 1-888-77-LOWES to schedule a factory-certified service appointment.

If the repair is covered by the manufacturer’s warranty you won’t be charged a cent.

What’s the Return Policy on Plants?

1 year from date of purchase.

This 1-year “plant guarantee” does not include annuals or clearance plants.

Just bring the dead plant back along with your receipt and you’ll get your money back.

If you still have the plant’s original container bring that back too, it will make the return process much easier.

PRO TIP: CLEVER “RECEIPT HACK” WHEN BUYING PLANTS

When buying plants from Lowe’s, keep your receipt in a save place. When buying indoor plants, my favorite tip is to put it in a Ziploc bag and tape it to the bottom of the container so you’ll never lose it.

Gift Cards…Can You Return Them?

The only way you can return a lost or stolen gift card is by presenting the original receipt.

Once presented, Lowe’s will reissue a new gift card for the remaining balance.

4 Lowe’s Return Policy Insider Hacks:

Here are some insider tips and hacks to make their return policy work best for you.

1. Return Item When Competitor has Lower Price?

If you notice that a local competitor like Home Depot or Ace Hardware has the item you bought at a lower price, you can get a price-match without returning the item. Just bring in proof of the lower price and you’ll get cash back for the difference PLUS an extra 10%.

2. Double Dip Your Savings with Store Credit (Not a Return)

Shop online at Lowe’s.com, but first use my favorite cashback site TopCashBack as they’ll give you 5% back on your Lowe’s online purchase.

When you’re checking out online, choose “store pickup” then stop by your local Lowe’s and pick-up your order.

Next, walk around the store for a few minutes, then return to the customer service desk and ask for “store credit” as you changed your mind on the purchase.

Result? You’ll still score the 5% cashback and have store credit to use on your next purchase. Rinse and repeat.

3. Lowe’s vs. The Home Depot

Whose return policy is better?

From talking to store employees, it seems to come down to individual store managers and how they handle returns.

Some managers (at both retailers) are very willing to bend over backwards to keep the customer happy and accept a return on darn near any product, regardless of age or condition.

The takeaway here is to get familiar with both retailers in your area and figure out which store is more lenient on returns (ESPECIALLY RETURNS WITHOUT A RECEIPT) and take your business there.

4. Pay Attention When They Scan Your Stuff

When you’re checking out and have multiple items that are only slightly different (color, size, etc) make sure they scan each item individually.

If they try and take a shortcut and scan the same item repeatedly, thinking they’re all the same, it will be VERY difficult to try and return any of the items as the SKU won’t be on your receipt.

I ordered online

Shelly

I ordered a dishwasher online 4/20/2020 I called to find out where it was bc it never came4/27/2020 as promised I waited until 5/7/2020 called again, now I was told it won’t ship till 9/2/2020 so I canceled the order, When do I get my money back on my debit card? Lowe’s customer service number is a joke I never can get through!!! Do I call my bank to report this??

Larry

FYI, due to the recent riots & looting, most of the Lowe’s (in my area anyway) will NOT do a return without a receipt or the card that was used for the purchase

Sokhin Siep

I bought a fridge over the weekend and I picked it up my self. during transport the fridge flew of the truck because I didn’t secure it tight enough. can I return the fridge or is there anything I can do?

Lori houston

Same thing happened to me , what can be done?

Ben

Call your credit card company to check because A my credit card issuuer (e.g. Citi Bank) covers accidental damage during the first 30 days!

All Lowe’s shoppers beware do not lose your receipt or you cannot return merchandise !! You can’t get store credit anymore ridiculous I have a commercial and a private account and buy tons of materials and do not have every receipt with me ? This new policy is the worst thing they could’ve done ! I will not be shopping there anymore and canceling my accounts . I’m opening up a account at Home Depot at least they treat their customers with respect !!!

Jeremy Klatt

Fred; same issue here. I also hold both commercial accounts and credit through this establishment. I’m a local business owner that shops at Lowe’s frequently. My experience yesterday was similar to yours. Actually, they INSISTED (against my wishes) that I get store credit for an item they I NEEDED placed back onto a particular account. The woman thrust the store card across the counter and said “deal with it.”

So I will

Net nat

Darn, Good to know. I knew I should have opted for them to text me the recipe

I also have an alert…I have several instore credits, believing that if I could not find items on the shelf but I ordered from the store I could use my credits, NOT TRUE. It seems that Lowes will hold your money hostage unless you purchase the way they want you to. Come on Lowes it’s is my money. Their bad. This unfriendly customer policy is the worst. Be careful.

Jonny

Don’t even matter if u do have a receipt they don’t do shit

Bec

Maybe a dumb question but we bought a new refrigerator in box and brought it home ourselves. It was too big and trying to install it we dented and scratched the side of the fridge. It scraped on a counter so its like a line of scratch. Anyway, we want to return it because its too big but will they take it with slight damage? Obviously I wouldnt expect to receive a full refund but, would they refund some?

Ben

A credit card (e.g. Citi Bank) does cover accidental damage during the first 30 days

Cassix

Yes. Bring it back, we will give you a trade for equal value or store credit or your money back if you present tour reciept.

Dan

No receipt for defective door locks… no refund or store credit not shopping with Lowe’s again

Lisa

Hi. I bought a high end Kohler faucet online and I am still within the 90 day return period. I have the receipt info online. Problem is it didn’t fit and I need to return it but the original Kohler box is missing. Can I still return this item?

Diamond

So I have a couple of items that I ordered online a like a year ago (yes I know). They are however completely unopened sealed in the original packaging and the items are still sold both in store and online (one item) and special order (the other item). I went to one store and they said it would need manager approval and the manager was not there; That was for the special order item. I tried to return the other item without any receipt and it came up receipt required at 2 different stores. Though it is sold in stores as well as online I ordered it online and I do have the order number and invoice number but it shows that it was May of 2019 clearly beyond 90 days.

Different stores seem to have different policies on it so I’m wondering what the most likely scenario is and considering these items are unopened if there is an ability to return for store credit. I’m not looking for cash and in fact there is an item that I want to buy with the return proceeds.

Tam

Are you kidding? Over $700 worth of stuff for my bathroom because I’m remodeling it. One of which was a Delts Faucet I had to order thru them because they didnt have it in the store. I purchased it in Nov 2019. It is untouched in the box unopened. I would like to just exchange it. Have no receipt unfortunately. Have no idea what I did with it. Also by the way the stupid card I used I dont have anymore because my bank actually issued me a new debit card so I cant even produce that card that I used to make the purchase however I do have my bank statement. So I get my bank statement and I take my faucet and all I want to do is exchange. So one lady says ok go get another faucet so.i picked a Kohler came back up she said I cant do this without a receipt. So I have to explain to her the whole fricking story after she just got done telling me you dont need a receipt you just need your drivers liscense. She said delta is going to want their money back I have to return this item and then get them money back and I cant do that without the receipt. So after I told her the story she says to me oh you cant exchange this it’s been over 180 days! I said what! It’s in a box its never even been opened that doesnt matter. I said ok well I called corporate and they told me and I didnt even get to finish what I was saying and she said corporate is in north Carolina. I was like what’s ur point? So there you go. Lowes basically sucks. It doesnt matter you cant take anything back basically or exchange anything unless u have the receipt and even if you do u better make sure you are within the time frame or it doesnt matter.

Betty

Sooo, your mad because You changed Your mind or didnt bother to make sure it fit when you purchased an item you had to special order online and waited 9 months to try and return it..Try doing that with the Car you decided you didnt want or the House you just bought or the New Puppy that got too big ..Be grateful that stores allow you to return anything thats not defective within a reasonable amount of time..if the manufacturer wont take it back the store loses and so do the consumers..prices go up to make up for the loss ..

brad meredith

Well that is bull she is not talking about a car or a house she is talking about bathroom fixtures and they are well compensated for returns

Betty

If you are returning online purchases make sure you have a copy of online receipt many items require a PO for return and it makes it quicker to look up your order especially when you do a lot of online shopping.
Also many in store items require a receipt for return or the system will deny it..Its across the board the associates have no control over it and managers cannot override a denial.

Jonny

Lowes is bullshit i bought a window ac broke under 90 days and bought 3 year protection plan and they say 30 days major appliance which it is not considered by any government or us law it is a small aplliance and cant get no help with it i wouldnt shop there if i was anyone

Luis

I bought a patio set that was on sale. It came in today and while putting it together discovered that the screws and holes on the sofa frame do not match up. There’s a half inch difference on the corner screw. I put together everything now I have to deal with Lowe’s on this frame issue.

Leticia Acosta

Is this where I complain? Kyle the Lowe’s Return policy sucks big time at the Bullhead City store. I returned hardware materials 11-14-2020 that I purchased 08-14-2020, 90 days right. Well, your cashier confirmed it but the register wouldn’t. She took it upon herself to give me store credit. I spoke to the manager, he said I couldn’t get a refund. I’m asking you to please talk to these employees. I don’t need the merchandise your store got it back but I got screwed. I want my refund.

Karen E Sironi

So I am on their no return list….how do I get off it? Had a receipt and the card that it was charged to. Been too long, ya happened prior to closing done for covid. Being a senior still not suppose to go out.

Deborah

My John Deere Lawn tractor caught on fire while I was mowing, any recourse here with Lowe’s?
