Lowe’s Return Policy: Cut Through the Crap…It’s Getting Worse
On the surface, the Lowe’s return policy seems pretty straight forward. But once you dig into it a little bit you realize it has some nuances to it that are worth knowing, especially if you shop at Lowe’s regularly. I originally wrote this article back in 2017, and unfortunately their policy has gotten much worse in recent years, especially with how they handle no-receipt returns and major appliance returns. Let’s break it all down.
How Many Return Days Does Lowe’s Give You?
90 days.
The Lowe’s return policy stipulates that you have 90 days to return items to their store.
What is the Return Policy on Major Appliances?
48 HOURS.
You only have 48 HOURS from time of delivery or pickup to return major appliances.
(NOTE: This is new as of early 2023, it used to be 30 days on appliances.)
So you’ll want to inspect appliances VERY closely upon delivery and refuse delivery if you notice something you don’t like.
If you notice damage after the delivery team leaves, you have 2 days from the time of delivery to call Lowe’s at 1-800-445-6937 to report the damage -OR- any missing parts.
The MAJOR exception to this is appliances returned in original, unopened, undamaged, and factory-sealed packaging, they still have 30 days.
This got me wondering what qualifies as “Factory-Sealed Packaging” on a refrigerator that they take out of the box BEFORE they wheel it into your kitchen.
So I called Lowe’s and was told the following, “If you did not receive the refrigerator in a box, then you are not required to return it in a box. Do not worry about that. This only affects customers who throw the packaging away.”
This leads me to believe that they’re talking about small appliances that you bring home yourself. Things like a microwave, small refrigerator, or a mixer that come in a box when you buy them and bring them home. You have 30 days to return these items as long as you don’t open them.
Let me know in the comments if you’ve had a different experience on this new twist in their return policy.
PRO TIP: CONSIDER LOWE’S CREDIT CARD FOR APPLIANCE PURCHASE
If you’ve read any of my articles on here, you know I’m not a big fan of store credit cards as the APR is astronomical and the terms typically suck. The one big exception is with the MyLowe’s Rewards credit card. If you open a new credit card, not only will you get 20% off your first purchase, but you’ll get a 30 day return policy on major appliances.

Do You Need Your Receipt to Make a Return?
Yes.
This is where their return policy started changing FOR THE WORSE in mid-2023.
In the past, if you didn’t have your receipt, Lowe’s would attempt to use your credit card, MyLowe’s card, or phone number to find your order details and issue store credit.
Those days appear to be LONG GONE as I’ve personally had them refuse my return twice when I didn’t have my receipt and they couldn’t find my order.
The last time I tried this type of return they would NOT even attempt to look up my order and I was told that their return policy regarding no-receipt returns is changing and rolling out to all stores by early-2024.
I was told that they were getting hit hard by scammers trying to return stolen merchandise, or used products well past 90 days, and they have changed their return policy because of this.
It’s too bad that a small percentage of returners have ruined their once useful policy for the rest of us.
Note: As of January 2024, from talking to many Lowe’s shoppers, this new policy is still being rolled out nationwide and some stores still have the old return policy posted but are adhering to the “new” policy and not allowing ANY returns without a receipt.
Let me know in the comments if your local Lowe’s is adhering to the old or new policy regarding this issue.
PRO TIP: ALWAYS GET RECEIPT EMAILED TO YOU
When checking out, always opt to get a printed receipt and one sent to your email. Then create a “Lowe’s” folder in your email account and drag all your receipts into it so you can quickly retrieve a receipt when you need it.

What If You Paid with Cash or a Check?
You will DEFINITELY need your receipt to get a refund or exchange if you use cash or a personal check.
The days of Lowe’s looking up your purchase with your phone number, or Lowe’s account, are long gone it appears.
Obviously this only applies to in-store purchases.
Are There Other Exceptions to the 90 Days?
Yes, there are quite a few exceptions and here they are…
Winter/Holiday Seasonal Items – Must be returned by December 31st of the same holiday season.
TVs and Electronics – 30 days. Does Lowe’s actually sell TVs?
Outdoor Power Equipment – 30 days.
Trailers – 30 days.
Air Conditioners and Evaporative Coolers – 30 days.
Water Heaters – 30 days.
Paint – 30 days.
Plants – 365 days. More on this below.
FYI: You can only return trailers to a Lowe’s store in the same state that you bought it.
Can I Return Used Outdoor Power Equipment?
If you bought a lawn mower, chain saw, weed eater, blower, pretty much anything that takes gasoline, I was told by a manager that you can return it within 30 days.
But you MUST drain all the gas from it before you bring it back and you MUST have the receipt.
What About Online Purchases?
The same 90-day return policy exists on purchases made via Lowes.com.
Most items bought online come with a prepaid shipping label which is WAY cool.
Just repackage the item with the original box, manual, and parts and send it back at no charge.
Or even easier, return the item to your local Lowe’s store if you have one in your area.
Unfortunately, when you return an item via the mail you’re out the original shipping charges (if any).

Can You Return Items Bought In-Store via the Mail?
If taking items back to the store is not convenient, you can indeed return items via mail.
Because you won’t have a prepaid shipping label, you’ll have to call Lowe’s directly at 1-800-445-6937 to initiate the return process.
What About Defects That Happen After 90 Days?
You just might be eligible for some relief if your product/appliance has a manufacturer defect after your 90 day return window expires.
Just call Lowe’s at 1-888-77-LOWES to schedule a factory-certified service appointment.
If the repair is covered by the manufacturer’s warranty you won’t be charged a cent.
What’s the Return Policy on Plants?
1 year from date of purchase.
This 1-year “plant guarantee” does not include annuals or clearance plants.
Just bring the dead plant back along with your receipt and you’ll get your money back.
If you still have the plant’s original container bring that back too, it will make the return process much easier.
PRO TIP: CLEVER “RECEIPT HACK” WHEN BUYING PLANTS
When buying plants from Lowe’s, keep your receipt in a save place. When buying indoor plants, my favorite tip is to put it in a Ziploc bag and tape it to the bottom of the container so you’ll never lose it.
Gift Cards…Can You Return Them?
The only way you can return a lost or stolen gift card is by presenting the original receipt.
Once presented, Lowe’s will reissue a new gift card for the remaining balance.
4 Lowe’s Return Policy Insider Hacks:
Here are some insider tips and hacks to make their return policy work best for you.
1. Return Item When Competitor has Lower Price?
If you notice that a local competitor like Home Depot or Ace Hardware has the item you bought at a lower price, you can get a price-match without returning the item. Just bring in proof of the lower price and you’ll get cash back for the difference PLUS an extra 10%.
2. Double Dip Your Savings with Store Credit (Not a Return)
Shop online at Lowe’s.com, but first use my favorite cashback site TopCashBack as they’ll give you 5% back on your Lowe’s online purchase.
When you’re checking out online, choose “store pickup” then stop by your local Lowe’s and pick-up your order.
Next, walk around the store for a few minutes, then return to the customer service desk and ask for “store credit” as you changed your mind on the purchase.
Result? You’ll still score the 5% cashback and have store credit to use on your next purchase. Rinse and repeat.
3. Lowe’s vs. The Home Depot
Whose return policy is better?
From talking to store employees, it seems to come down to individual store managers and how they handle returns.
Some managers (at both retailers) are very willing to bend over backwards to keep the customer happy and accept a return on darn near any product, regardless of age or condition.
The takeaway here is to get familiar with both retailers in your area and figure out which store is more lenient on returns (ESPECIALLY RETURNS WITHOUT A RECEIPT) and take your business there.
4. Pay Attention When They Scan Your Stuff
When you’re checking out and have multiple items that are only slightly different (color, size, etc) make sure they scan each item individually.
If they try and take a shortcut and scan the same item repeatedly, thinking they’re all the same, it will be VERY difficult to try and return any of the items as the SKU won’t be on your receipt.

I have a bathroom vanity delivered that is great but won’t work with the plumbing. I have done everything but stand on my head to get a response on how to arrange for pickup to return.
Covid smovid its a fancy political name for the flu. Never got the flu shot cause I don’t get the flu. Same with covid. Don’t care if everyone wears a mask I never will. Its against concealed weapons carry laws.
You’re an idiot.
Tell my dead wife and 3 year old daughter you ass.
Your response is an indication of you intillect
He’s right Covid is nothing but the flu if the flu killed your wife I’m sorry but her immune system had to be severely weak because if Covid 19 was real , it has a 99.9 % survival rate just saying
Actually its a survival rate of 99 to 99.5 percent.
Even if you survive it, which almost everyone does of course, it can mess you up. It also causes brain atrophy. Even in people with mild or no symptoms. Its similar to the flu in that it is a virus; But its more contagious and deadlier, and can have long lasting effects. Also its a new virus and problems are compounded by hospitals filling up. Have you been living under a rock or were you born with severe brain atrophy?
Actually, your % rate is incorrect. Regardless, small percentages add up to a lot of actual deaths.
you’re not sorry, you’re an ass and you know much less about virology than you think you do.
This country needs team players, not selfish idiots like you. Please leave. Thanks.
my 2 pharmacy degrees say that you’re wrong but whatever. Bless your pointed head boiiiiiiii.
Pharmacy degrees mean nothing and Big Pharma is going down soon. Anyone who pushed the jab will be held accountable. Covid equals Crimes Against Humanity.
Allen and Tony are the only sensible people in this Convo. The rest of you would do whatever your government told you to do. Regardless of whether it makes a bit of sense. I had covid and it felt just like the flu. I don’t think the country needed to shut down over that.
A lot of people die from cancer. Some are treated easily. That doesn’t mean you disregard others experience and the seriousness of it because you got off lightly.
Well said Tony! Agree 100% about the covid crap!
We recently purchased almost 600.00 on deck stain and purchased a gas grill. We had to almost twists associates arm just to get them to unlock the grill then had to have another customer help in loading it. We didn’t tie the grill down thought it would be heavy enough and the customer said to my husband that he didn’t tie it down and just pushed it all the way to the front of the truck. We’ll just after leaving the store the grill came flying out the back of the truck. Now I know this was totally our fault however if we would have had a store associate to help in loading they would’ve more than likely suggested we tie it down. Not to mention I know for a fact they have returned items of this nature many times before. Lowe’s has lost our business forever. We have purchased doors, decking materials, materials for our bathroom makeover, thousands of dollars worth of product. I will drive 2hrs out of the way to never shop there again. They return product they know is stolen from twekers before hard working productive citizens.
Cookeville TN
SO STUPID, both of you, if you would have waited for store help i’m sure they would have told you to TIE IT DOWN
Aaron chill out u tough ass bitch
The cookeville store in particular isn’t very good with customer service.
Maybe next time one of them twekers will lend a hand at loading & tiring the load down. I bet they are pretty handy at loading & hauling. Something anybody with just a hint of common sense know how to do.
Yours truly,
Tweker Bob
The degree to which you are capable externalizing your own poor decision and blame someone else totally flabbergasts me. Take some responsibility ffs.
Whatever happened to taking accountability for your OWN actions?? Did you seriously need a store associate to tell you to tie something heavy and unstable down in the back of a truck going at high speeds down, at time, bumpy roads? Come on now. Its an IQ test! The store had nothing to do with your bad decision!
Regardless of all the hearsay,
Bottom line is poor customer service.
Look at NYSE, make wise decisions.
Damn, y’all go hard in the comments. I’m glad I found this …. 🍿
My father passed with a less than $30 credit on a card from Lowes. THE DEATH CERTIFICATE and his license are not sufficient enough to transfer that over. They locked my driver’s license and my husband’s for trying to return some of my father’s Lowes purchases because the ‘customer service’ lady assumed we were lying and trying to return stolen things I guess. That is why I submitted the death certificate which they are saying is not enough and they want a court order.
Writing the company and sending a copy of my and my fathers DL I get an e-mail to write down my DL info. I have written back saying the picture of the actual card is not enough? No answer yet.
I don’t see a policy on it, asking for a policy has gone unanswered. Does anyone have any tips for this?
Horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible!!! customer service!! Been trying to get my money back for a week now on a refrigerator that was never even available for delivery. Sat on hold 25 minutes and then hung up on. Trying another number, been on hold now for 30 min. Never buy a major appliance from Lowes.
Did u ever get a correct number or person to contact? I too am having a terrible time with customer service!!!
my ex friend replaced an air conditioner that he owes me and he bought it with a debt card. Inherited gave me the receipt in case it wouldn’t work for me to exchange. I decided to return it and get a smaller unit that was less expensive and when I got there the cashier was so busy worrying if I was within the time frame of 30 days . Well she obviously had know idea what the return policy was because due to Covid it’s 180 ! I told I do t have access to that debt card so either gift card or cash . She used the debt card ! They kept my air conditioner a d did not reverse the transaction so now I lost 490 dollars and without any air and it’s 130 in bullhead ! Can anyone tell me what the policy is on this I want to sue them for my
Money and the fact I do not have any way of cooling my home now !!!
LOL, why are you trying to get a Smaller window unit if it’s 130? which it’s NOt, 120 maybe, I live in bullhead also and used to work at that lowe’s. Not saying you’re wrong, but ALLLOT of shady people try to get free stuff or return to get money for nothing through there.
Tried returning a new still in the package air hose. Manager was a total dick and denied me without a receipt. He must’ve flagged me, as I’m not able to return it for store credit at a different Lowe’s. Great way to keep customers
Just have a friend return it for you then
So I had an employee, whom is no longer working for me, that had a in-store credit gift card. He offered to accept a lower amount then the actual amount on the giftcard if I would allow him to pay for my supplies. After everything was said and done the homeowner decided he didn’t want the backsplash that he himself had picked out. After the job had been completed with a new backsplash I went and returned the original backsplash in which I had the receipt for that purchase. It was then put on a new giftcard but linked to the former employees drivers license. I have no way of contacting him or even know his whereabouts. Is there anyway Lowe’s could put the $328 on a new giftcard since I have all the receipts for the purchases made with the giftcard
I tried return tiles to different Lowes than original purchase With with receipt and they said I had to go back to the original store where I bought them because they couldn’t return it because they don’t they didn’t sell that particular tile is this true?
what if the items were delivered i don’t have the ability to load and return
Then contact them and let them know you need some help.
I just finished a 4 month process of cosmetic upgrades to our bathroom from Lowes and Home Depot and have been returning items that were in the garage staging area. My wife changed her mind on the table LOL. It seems that as soon as I walk in to the store to return some items which has been about 5 or 6 times because the items did not work or were already damaged and back on the shelf. But they became rude immediately and treated me poorly…getting loud or slamming things on the counter while they tried to get rid of me the whole time and all I’m asking is why they gave me store credit instead of putting it back on my card. So I lose the taxes and when I use the card I don’t receive my 5% discount. Crooks!!!!
I received a crsftman power tool battery but they are the wrong brand. I don’t have a receipt for the item can I return that product
Yes, you’ll get store credit.
Depends on the store. One store would not replace a defective Kobalt 24v battery with a 1/21 dete stamp (3-year warranty) without a receipt. Other store had no problems doing so.
When does the consumer take responsibility of there own action come sense come into play mean ol mr gravity !!!!!
I am at the Maplewood mo. Store, and just returned stuff still in original box. Under 80 days, and was told that instead of 109.00 I get lowest price that was ever rang for that item number so I got 30.00. the policy states that I’m supposed to get current price. Is every store different?
Range hoods are considered major appliances. 30 days.
