Marshalls Return Policy: Everything You Need to Know + Insider Tips for Success
When it comes to popular discount stores, Marshalls tops the list for many bargain shoppers. But the Marshalls return policy can be confusing, especially when you lose your receipt or when returning a gift. Their policy even differs depending on whether you made your purchase online or in-store which can be REALLY confusing. So I went out and figured out how it all works at Marshalls so your next return will be a piece of cake. Let’s get to it…
How Many Return Days Does Marshalls Offer?
30 Days.
Just bring back your items within 30 days for a full refund to your original form of payment.
Do I Need My Receipt to Return Stuff?
Unless you want store credit, YES you’ll need your receipt.
Without your receipt you’ll be stuck with store credit for the current selling price of the item.
The same can be said for returns with a receipt that are over 30 days old.
PRO TIP: MANY MANAGERS ARE LENIENT
If you have your receipt and it’s been 31-45 days since you made the purchase, often times the Marshalls manager on shift WILL accept the return. So be polite and always give it a try as you stand a great chance for success.

Does Marshalls Offer an “Extended” Holiday Return Policy?
Yes.
Purchases made at Marshalls between 10/8/23 – 12/24/23 may be returned all the way until 1/25/24.
Their normal return policy will then apply to all purchases starting on 12/26/23.
If I Have My Receipt Do I Need My Credit Card?
Yes.
I called Marshalls and asked this question specifically and was told that “Yes, the physical credit card has to be present for money to be put back on to it.”
Can Items Be Worn or Used?
No.
Very little wiggle room on this one as Marshalls imposes a strict policy.
Anything that appears to be used, worn, or “unsellable” will NOT be taken back.

PRO TIP: RETURNING CLOTHING THAT FALLS APART
While Marshalls has the blanket policy of not taking back worn clothing, if you wear something, wash it, and it starts to fall apart at the seams, they will USUALLY let you return it. Technically it’s left up to the manager’s discretion, but from the employees that I’ve talked with, most will definitely let you return stuff that starts to fall apart.
Any Exceptions to the 30 Days?
There are a few return policy exceptions worth noting:
– Gift Cards: Not eligible for a return.
– Beauty Items/Perfume: If they’ve been opened or tampered with you cannot return them.
– Handbags: If you spent over $499.99 on a handbag you cannot return it in-store. Call Marshalls at 888-627-7425 to discuss your options.
– Long Occasion Gowns: Can’t return them in-store.
– Stuff Over $1,000 in value: Not eligible for an in-store return. Call the above phone number and find out what your options are.
– Final Sale Items: Guess what? You cannot return them. Sell them on eBay if you don’t want them.
– Swimwear and Undergarments: While still a 30-day return policy, items must still have the original price tag attached to be returnable.
PRO TIP: MUST RETURN ITEMS TO MARSHALLS…NOT TJ MAXX
Some stores let you return items to their sister brands, but NOT Marshalls. While you can return items to ANY Marshalls store, you cannot return stuff to TJ Maxx, Home Goods or Sierra.
What About Online Purchases?
40 days.
Marshalls gives you an extra 10 days to return online purchases.
You can return items to your local Marshalls or via the mail.
When returning in-store, be sure to bring your receipt or shipping confirmation email. It’s also worth noting that your packing slip serves as your receipt.
When returning via the mail, use the return shipping label that was included in your package and follow the instructions.
Be aware that you’ll be hit with a steep $11.99 fee when returning via FedEx, and it will take 10-14 business days after they receive your return to credit your account.
For this reason, always return in-store when possible.
All refunds of online purchases will be credited to your original form of payment.

What About a Return to a No Longer Available Credit Card?
I actually had someone ask me this question in the comments, so I contacted Marshalls to find the answer.
I was told that in most cases store credit will be issued, but the rep I talked to had heard of some managers offering cash back.
So it doesn’t hurt to ask for cash, but be prepared to get store credit.
Can I Return Gifts Without a Gift Receipt?
Yes, but you’ll have to settle for store credit at the current selling price of the item -OR- an even exchange.
Again, items cannot be worn or used.
DID YOU PAY WITH A CHECK?
If you originally paid with a check at Marshalls and want a cash refund, you’ll have to wait 10 days after the purchase date for your check to clear the bank.

Can My Return Be Turned Down?
Yes.
If Marshalls feels you’re abusing their return policy they can decline your return.
This usually happens when you make too many receipt-less returns.
To this end, they track all returns to keep their policy from being abused.
NO RECEIPT? BE PREPARED TO SHOW YOUR I.D.
Marshalls is cracking down on fraudulent returns and requires a valid I.D., name, signature, and current address when making a return WITHOUT a receipt. If they give you store credit on a receipt-less return, your name will be on the merchandise credit. Only you will be able to use the credit and you’ll need to show your I.D. when making a purchase with the merchandise credit.
What If I Paid via PayPal?
If you paid via PayPal on an in-store purchase, you’ll have to settle for merchandise credit when making a return.
If you used PayPal to make an online purchase, your refund will be a charge-back credit to your PayPal account, minus a $9.99 S/H fee.
